The Sony FDR-X1000V action cam makes a strong push into the 4K market with an exceptionally sharp image that outperforms its main competitor, the GoPro Hero 4 Black, in resolution testing. It achieves this by recording 4K video at 30 fps with a remarkably high 100 Mb/s bitrate via XAVC S recording, though this requires an expensive and less common UHS-I U3 microSDXC card. Equipped with a high-quality Zeiss lens and an IPX4 splash-proof body right out of the box, the camera functions without its bulky outer case to capture superior audio quality. It also includes built-in GPS, WiFi, and NFC capabilities, allowing users to geotag footage or live stream directly to Ustream. Despite its recording advantages, the FDR-X1000V falls short due to significant design and usability flaws. Its physical controls are highly inefficient, featuring a slow and clunky menu system that requires tedious sub-menu navigation, such as 12 button presses just to toggle WiFi. This is compounded by a disappointing battery life that yields only 63 minutes of continuous 1080p shooting, a limitation made worse because the camera cannot...

The Sony FDR-X1000V Action Cam review by Sean Michael highlights a mix of high-quality video capabilities and frustrating technical limitations. On the positive side, the camera boasts impressive electronic image stabilization ("Steadyshot") in 1080p mode, which delivers noticeably smoother footage. It supports high-quality XAVCS codecs (50 Mbps and 100 Mbps), offers great HD video framerates like 1080p at 60p and 720p at 240p, and shoots in 4K resolution. Additionally, users benefit from a standalone splashproof body that slips into a pocket and decent stereo audio recording under ideal conditions.

The Sony FDR-X1000V Action Cam is a miniature, Handycam-shaped wearable camera designed to challenge GoPro in the high-end action video market. It delivers exceptional 4K video resolution at a high 100Mbps bitrate via an efficient XAVC S codec, resulting in noticeably sharper footage than its competitors. Among its standout pros are a premium 170-degree ultra-wide Zeiss Tessar lens, highly effective SteadyShot electronic image stabilization in Full HD modes, built-in GPS geotagging, and a splash-proof body that functions in light rain without an external housing. Furthermore, it features a quality stereo microphone with integrated wind-noise reduction and unique software capabilities, such as multi-camera live previews and seamless highlight creation.

The Sony FDR-X1000V 4K Action Cam is a barrel-shaped point-of-view camera designed to shoot high-quality adventure footage, serving as a direct competitor to the GoPro Hero 4 Black. It captures true 4K video at 3840 x 2160 resolution up to 100Mbps, alongside various high-definition modes like 120p slow-motion. Key strengths (pros) include a wide 170-degree Zeiss f/2.8 lens, a high-quality stereo microphone with built-in wind reduction, and an included housing unit that makes the splashproof body fully waterproof. It also features "Steady Shot" image stabilisation for full HD recording, loop recording, manual controls for white balance and exposure shifting, and wireless connectivity to monitor footage via a smartphone app or a separate LiveView wrist remote. On the downside (cons), navigating the control display menus is frustratingly slow, and making a single mistake forces users to restart the menu scroll from the beginning. Additionally, the Steady Shot stabilization feature does not work when filming in 4K resolution, handles only minor vibrations, and drains the battery charge much faster when active. The camera also completely lacks a built-in playback screen, requiring external...

The Sony FDR-X1000V is a high-performance 4K action camera designed as a direct competitor to the GoPro Hero 4 Black. Boasting a long, thin form factor that sits easily in one hand, it features an f/2.8 Zeiss Tessar lens and a 1/2.3-inch Exmor R CMOS sensor capable of full pixel readout without pixel binning, which noticeably reduces jagged edges and false coloring. It delivers highly sharp image quality with crisp, default Vivid colors, and includes a Neutral color profile for post-production fine-tuning. On the technical side, it shoots 4K video at up to 30 fps (100 Mbps) in XAVC S format, as well as lower resolution slow-motion videos up to 240 fps in MP4 format. A major highlight is its digital SteadyShot image stabilization, which can even be configured to counter the specific vibration frequencies of aerial drones, though it requires a cropped frame and is unavailable during 4K recording. While the camera excels in image output, it falls short regarding on-board ergonomics and specific field conditions. Reviewers noted distinct strengths, including an IPX4 splash-resistant build that protects it from...

The Sony FDR-X1000V is a compact 4K action camera that shoots 3,840×2,160 video at up to 30fps with impressively high bit rates of 60Mbit/s or 100Mbit/s using Sony's versatile XAVC S codec. Key advantages of this camera include its built-in GPS for overlaying speed and map data, highly effective Electronic Image Stabilisation (SteadyShot) for reducing vibrations in 1080p mode, and built-in stereo microphones featuring excellent wind noise reduction. Furthermore, its removable battery delivers strong performance, providing up to 2 hours and 5 minutes of recording at 1080p/30fps and 52 minutes when shooting in 4K. However, the camera suffers from several functional and design drawbacks. A major downside is that its Electronic Image Stabilisation cannot be used when recording in 4K resolution. In terms of image performance, it records less shadow detail than its competitor, the GoPro Hero4 Black, and its "Vivid" and "Natural" colour modes lean toward being either overly saturated or too drab. Physical usability is also hindered by a fiddly, nested menu system, a memory card slot that easily allows microSD cards to be inserted backwards, and a...

The Sony FDR-X1000V is a high-end, 4K action camera designed as a direct competitor to the GoPro Hero 4 Black, featuring a unique and rugged aerodynamic "pistol" shape. Retailing at $399.99 for the base model, it delivers authentic 3840 x 2160 resolution video, vivid colour profiles, and exceptional audio quality through its built-in stereo microphone. The camera stands out for its well-built, splashproof body (IPX4 rating) and its seamless integration with the watch-shaped RMLVR2 Live-View Remote controller. This remote allows for hassle-free settings adjustment and real-time video previewing on the user's wrist. Additionally, the camera supports multi-camera WiFi connectivity, live streaming via Ustream, and an optional waterproof housing that permits diving up to 10 metres. Despite its strong performance, the review highlights several distinct drawbacks. The most prominent con is the camera's unbelievably cluttered and frustrating user interface, which relies on confusing naming and abbreviations that require extensive manual reading to master. Performance-wise, the highly praised SteadyShot electronic image stabilization is completely unavailable when recording in 4K resolution. Furthermore, its low-light performance for night landscapes is somewhat disappointing for a...
