Shimano CM-1000 Review | 96 Data compared

Product Overview and Strengths The Shimano CM-1000 is an incredibly small, lightweight (86g) action camera optimized for cycling that stands out for its native, out-of-the-box waterproofing up to 10 meters for 2 hours, which eliminates the need for a bulky external case. Its primary strength lies in its advanced sports integration, featuring built-in ANT+ connectivity to pair with heart rate straps, speed/cadence sensors, power meters, and Shimano Di2 shifting systems. It records this telemetry into simple, open CSV files matching each video file. Furthermore, Shimano cleverly adopted the standard GoPro mounting style as its primary connection system, making it instantly compatible with a massive ecosystem of third-party bike mounts and accessories. It also features a useful "Angle Free" mode that automatically auto-rotates the video file to remain upright whether the unit is mounted normally, sideways, or upside-down. Weaknesses and User Limitations Despite its physical design strengths, the camera suffers from significant usability hurdles, primarily due to its lack of a built-in screen or a remote control. Users must rely entirely on memorizing a confusing combination of two status lights and...

The Shimano CM-1000 Sport Camera is characterized as a refined, compact, and lightweight action camera featuring simple two-button operation, clear video quality, and an waterproof design that operates without an external housing. Pros include its user-friendly interface, effective ANT+ data integration, and impressive versatility on the trail, making it a strong initial entry into the market. Conversely, the review highlights significant limitations, including a non-removable, proprietary internal battery that restricts long-duration recording and heavy reliance on a smartphone app for setting adjustments. Furthermore, the camera's capability for capturing still photos is noted as limited compared to competitor products.

The ENDURO Mountainbike Magazine review of the Shimano CM-1000 action camera highlights its compact, lightweight design (94g) and out-of-the-box waterproofing up to 10 meters without needing an external housing. It features an easy-to-use two-button interface, audio recording cues, and a helpful "free-rotate mode" that automatically keeps images horizontal regardless of how the camera is mounted. The camera also includes a built-in ANT+ receiver to connect with external sensors, and utilizes a GoPro-compatible mounting system that works seamlessly with numerous aftermarket accessories. A dedicated smartphone app provides an intuitive interface for live views, file adjustments, and settings customization via Wi-Fi. However, the camera falls short of market-leading image quality, particularly during challenging front-lit or low-light scenarios where it suffers from strong flaring, loss of detail, and delayed exposure adjustments. Its ultra-wide 180° field of view introduces significant distortion across the image, and a slight play can develop between the camera and its included helmet mount over time. Additionally, the non-removable internal battery limits recording sessions to around two hours per charge. Finally, the unreleased companion editing software at the time of...

The Shimano CM-1000 is a low-profile cycling action camera that offers the distinct advantage of being waterproof right out of the box without requiring an external housing. It delivers good video quality, recording in full HD and supporting high frame rates up to 120fps for slow-motion shots. Additionally, the camera features a wide-angle lens with an ultra-wide mode to capture vast surroundings, and it includes ANT+ connectivity designed to log riding data like speed and cadence. However, the camera suffers from several functional drawbacks, starting with the baffling omission of a handlebar mount in the box. The companion smartphone app is described as highly unstable and completely non-functional on newer Android versions, forcing the user to rely on an old tablet just to adjust settings or delete files. The camera also lacks an automatic loop-recording feature to overwrite old files. Furthermore, the battery life is poor, capping out around 90 minutes. Finally, the audio performance is ruined by a loud, constant rattling sound caused by a loose fit in its original mounting component.

The Shimano CM-1000 Sport Camera is a lightweight, 3-ounce action camera that functions as an alternative to GoPro brackets, featuring a high-performing video resolution up to 1080p and dual lens angles of 135 or 180 degrees. Testers found that the 1280×720 mode produced the highest quality results, delivering crisp details, true-to-life colors, and rapid exposure adjustments in shifting trail conditions. It features a continuous battery run time of up to two hours and includes distinct color-coded lighting systems and audio beeps to easily signal its recording status. Additionally, linking the camera via Wi-Fi to a smartphone opens up critical utility features, such as viewing a live feed to adjust mounting positions and activating custom time-lapse interval shooting. However, the camera comes with notable downsides, receiving a low 2-star rating from the testers. A major physical drawback is the power and mode selection button, which is too small and heavily guarded to be comfortably pressed while wearing riding gloves. Furthermore, using the included protective lens filters causes annoying cropped vignetting in the corners of the images, yet operating without them is...

The Shimano CM-1000 is a lightweight (86g), compact, and rugged action camera that delivers exceptional Full HD video and JPEG still images, even performing reliably in challenging low-light conditions and direct sunlight. Key highlights include its built-in Wi-Fi integration with a dedicated iOS and Android smartphone app, allowing for seamless setting adjustments and a helpful "Liveview" alignment feature. It uniquely integrates with ANT and ANT+ devices, recording cycling metrics like speed, cadence, and heart rate into a separate CSV file that can be overlaid onto the standard.MOV video files. Additionally, the camera boasts a waterproof rating of up to 10 metres (33 feet), dual angle modes (135° and 180°), and an "Angle Free" auto-image rotation setting, all while utilizing standard GoPro-style mounting. Despite its high performance, the review highlights several notable drawbacks regarding its out-of-the-box completeness. Shimano only supplies a basic helmet mount, meaning handlebar or saddle rail mounts—such as the recommended K-EDGE premium machined aluminum alternatives—must be purchased separately. The camera also lacks an included Micro SD/SDHC memory card, and users must purchase a Class 6 or higher card...

It features a compact, low-profile design that does not look bulky when mounted on a helmet. The camera offers a battery life of just over two hours and includes multiple recording widths, such as a 180-degree super wide angle and a 135-degree wide angle. Priced starting at around $270, it positions itself as a budget-friendly competitor to the top-tier GoPro models, offering core features in a simple package with easy setup and smooth software integration on a computer. The main advantages (pros) of the camera are its weight, weather-proof design that requires no external case, and built-in ANT+ connectivity. The ANT+ capability allows riders to pair the device with other cycling electronics to create data overlays during playback, displaying statistics like speed and gearing via third-party software. The Ultimate France Shimano CM-1000 review highlights a highly compact, 86-gram action camera engineered for ultra-lightweight functionality. A standout pro is its out-of-the-box IPX8 waterproof rating allowing submersion up to 10 metres without bulky external housing, alongside a bright f/2.0 lens that effortlessly handles rapid lighting shifts in covered terrain. Furthermore, cyclists benefit from extensive connectivity, as it integrates via ANT+ and D-Fly Data Management to overlay real-time cadence, heart rate, power, and Shimano Di2 gearing data directly onto videos. It also features dual lens angle modes (135-degree wide and 180-degree fish-eye) and offers GoPro mount compatibility, allowing riders to leverage a massive existing ecosystem of accessories. However, the review details several prominent constraints, most notably a non-replaceable built-in battery that limits filming sessions to under two hours before requiring a full four-hour recharge. Operating the unit independently is hindered by a lack of an integrated LCD screen, forcing users to rely entirely on a companion smartphone app for essential framing, adjustments, and playback. This app dependency is compounded by a fickle Wi-Fi connection that occasionally drops out. Additionally, the...

The Contour Roam 3 stands out as the most user-friendly and affordable option at $270, coming ready to use out of the box with an included 8 GB micro SD card. Its main advantages include a simple two-switch operation, a 270-degree rotating lens with a laser leveling guide, and native waterproofing up to 10 meters without requiring an extra case. However, its simpler design means it lacks advanced connectivity features like Wi-Fi or ANT+, does not support a smartphone app, and is capped at a maximum video resolution of 1080p across seven settings. The Shimano CM-1000 ($340) and the GoPro Hero 4 Silver ($450) offer higher-end features but come with distinct trade-offs. The Shimano camera excels in cycling integration, featuring ANT+ protocol to connect with Shimano Di2 systems for potential remote shifting control, alongside a 10-meter waterproof body and simple controls. On the downside, its Wi-Fi app only permits previews rather than real-time recording display, it provides just three resolution settings (max 1080p), and it lacks free editing software. Meanwhile, the GoPro Hero 4 Silver is the top performer, boasting...
