Filco Majestouch Minila R Convertible Review | 64 Data compared

The FILCO MINILA-R Convertible is highly praised by the reviewer as the best compact mechanical keyboard for programmers due to its exceptional productivity features and hardware reliability. The primary pros include its highly efficient compact layout featuring dual Fn keys next to the spacebar and a customizable DIP switch that allows the CapsLock key to be remapped to Ctrl, which helps typists maintain their home row position. Furthermore, it boasts phenomenal battery life from AA batteries that lets users "forget it," a clean aesthetic free of unnecessary RGB lighting, and an improved multi-device connection system that seamlessly toggles between up to four wireless devices and one USB 2.0 wired connection. The reviewer also highlights the addition of the Cherry MX Silent Red switches as a major win, offering a shorter, more comfortable strike distance compared to previous generations. The Filco Majestouch MINILA is a 68-key, 60% layout mechanical keyboard that stands out for its high-quality, heavy, and sturdy plastic frame designed in Japan. A major advantage of this compact board is the inclusion of dedicated arrow keys, which the reviewer highly values. Additionally, its heavy build, thick frame, and striking red LEDs provide a premium feel. The reviewer also praised the implementation of Cherry MX Black linear switches, noting that the extra force required helped prevent bottoming out and ultimately boosted typing speed.

Despite these strong points, the reviewer notes a few drawbacks and specific design changes that users should consider. The 2nd generation MINILA-R Convertible introduces "Patch Keycaps" made of PBT plastic, which have a slightly smaller surface touch area compared to the older MINILA-Air model and can still become greasy over extended periods of use. Additionally, the keystroke travel distance on the new version feels noticeably shorter than its predecessor. Finally, the reviewer points out that the keyboard lacks backlighting entirely, which, while preferred by this specific reviewer, might be viewed as a negative feature for users who enjoy RGB lighting customisation.
