Onyx Boox Go Color 7 Review | 68 Data compared

The Onyx Boox Go Color 7 is a premium 7-inch e-reader featuring an open Android operating system, enabling access to the Google Play Store for apps like Kindle and Kobo. Its Kaleido 3 E Ink display provides 300ppi for monochrome text and 150ppi for color, supported by octa-core performance, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. Key advantages include a comfortable, compact design with physical page-turn buttons and long battery life, making it ideal for reading graphic novels and colored content. The device offers extensive customization through the NeoReader app, allowing for personalized text layouts and image adjustments. However, the e-reader lacks an official IP water-resistance rating and features a, at times, polarizing, paper-like textured back panel. Other drawbacks include weak onboard speakers and limited customization functionality when using third-party apps instead of the default reader.

The TechRadar review of the Onyx Boox Go Color 7 highlights a highly portable 7-inch Android ereader with a "Kindle Killer" form factor, featuring a slim design and customizable physical page-turn buttons. While praised for its, fast Qualcomm processor, and expandable storage, the device is criticized for a lack of waterproofing and a 7-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 display that suffers from muted colors and low-contrast text, notes the reviewer. Despite the benefits of an open Android system offering full Play Store access, the user experience is hampered by a clunky interface, bugs, and high battery drain in standby compared to competitors.

The Boox Go Color 7, as reviewed on InsiderPhD, is a compact 7-inch e-reader designed for portability, featuring physical page-turn buttons and an ergonomic, wide-bezel design. It balances color capability with faster processing and sharper text than previous models, making it suitable for both color content and text-heavy documents. Key advantages include the open Android system for installing third-party apps, the convenience of physical buttons, and a comfortable, lightweight form factor for one-handed reading. The Kaleido 3 color screen is considered acceptable for reading graphic novels and viewing charts. However, the device experiences significant ghosting and lag when browsing the web or zooming, and the screen is darker compared to traditional backlit displays. Additionally, the 7-inch size is limiting for large PDF files, and the bundled magnetic case was criticized for its poor fit.

The Trusted Reviews assessment of the Onyx Boox Go Color 7 highlights the device as a well-built, highly portable 7-inch e-reader particularly suited for visual content like comics, manga, and book illustrations, featuring a slender, lightweight build, integrated physical page-turn buttons, and an included magnetic sleep cover. A major functional advantage is the open Android ecosystem, providing full access to the Google Play Store to download varied reading apps, which offers significant versatility over closed-system competitors. However, the device has a high price point and lacks critical features found in rivals, specifically an official IP rating for water resistance and stylus support, according to the review. The Onyx Boox Go Color 7, reviewed by Android Police, is a 7-inch e-reader featuring the Google Play Store and physical page-turn buttons, offering significant customization and a comfortable, portable design. While praised for its 4GB of RAM and microSD expansion for large libraries, the device suffers from a display that can appear too dim or over-saturated in bright, direct sunlight. Ultimately, the $250 device is described as a powerful tool, though its complex, highly adjustable interface may be overly "fiddly" for users seeking a simple, non-tablet experience.

The Onyx Boox Go Color 7 Gen II is a 7-inch, 195g, slim e-reader featuring an open Android 13 ecosystem that enables installation of third-party apps like Kindle and Libby, alongside improved physical page-turn buttons. While it offers versatile app support, the Kaleido 3 screen suffers from a noticeable yellow hue, color ghosting, and a "fuzzy," dark appearance that requires high front-light settings. Despite added stylus support, the device faces performance trade-offs, including rapid battery drain, unrefined software, and a lack of waterproofing.

The Boox Go Color 7 is presented as a powerful, pocketable Android 13 e-reader that bridges the gap between traditional reading devices and mini-tablets, featuring a Kaleido 3 screen and physical, ergonomic page-turn buttons. Key advantages include full Google Play Store access, excellent visibility in direct sunlight, and a snappy user experience for reading comics and manga. However, the device is criticized for "mushy" and inconsistent physical buttons, color performance that can appear muddy in certain media, and a lack of a dedicated screen refresh button. Ultimately, it is described as a versatile, premium choice with MicroSD support for "power users" who want to break free from closed ecosystems. For the full, detailed review, visit Overkill.

Pocket-lint spent two weeks with the Go Color 7, which became the reviewer's daily device for books, comics and podcasts. The 2,300 mAh battery stood out: 15% was left after nearly two weeks, and a full recharge took under two hours. Android 12 opens the door to Kindle, Libby and Koreader, and the 64 GB of storage expands with microSD. The device weighs about 195 grams and feels sturdy enough to toss into a commuter bag without worry. Comics read well, but the reviewer notes slight color washing, less contrast and the need to pinch zoom. The verdict is enthusiastic: refresh issues and input lag exist, but recent software updates address most problems.
