What we like about Amazon Kindle Oasis 2017 WiFi 32GB

  • Larger 7-inch E Ink display provides 30% more screen real estate than previous models
  • First Kindle with an IPX8 water-resistance rating, safe for baths or pools
  • Dedicated physical page-turn buttons offer a tactile and responsive experience
  • Premium aluminium unibody design feels more durable and high-end than plastic models
  • Built-in Bluetooth support allows for Audible audiobook playback
  • Includes an adaptive ambient light sensor that adjusts brightness automatically
  • Ergonomic asymmetrical design with a weighted 'hump' makes it easy to hold one-handed

What we don't like about Amazon Kindle Oasis 2017 WiFi 32GB

  • Significantly more expensive than other models like the Paperwhite, which offer similar reading quality
  • The metal back can feel uncomfortably cold to the touch in low temperatures
  • Heavier and bulkier than the original Oasis, making it less pocket-friendly
  • Battery life is sometimes reported to be shorter than expected when using Bluetooth or high brightness
  • Uses an older Micro-USB port instead of the more modern USB-C
  • Lacks the color temperature adjustment (warm light) found in the 2019 version
  • Magnetic covers can occasionally feel less secure than previous 'snap-on' versions

Verdict

The 2017 Amazon Kindle Oasis (9th Generation) is a premium 7-inch e-reader featuring a high-resolution 300 ppi E Ink display and a 32GB storage capacity capable of holding thousands of books or approximately 160 Audible audiobooks. Its main characteristics include a slim, asymmetrical aluminum design with physical page-turn buttons, an IPX8 waterproof rating for submersion up to two metres, and a built-in accelerometer that automatically rotates the screen for left- or right-handed use. Key pros are its crisp, glare-free screen with 12 LEDs for even lighting, Bluetooth support for Audible playback, and an ambient light sensor for automatic brightness adjustment. However, notable cons include its high price point, the use of an older micro-USB charging port instead of USB-C, and an aluminum back that can feel cold or slippery to the touch.
