SJCAM M20 Review | 96 Data compared

The SJCAM M20 is a highly compact and lightweight action camera featuring a 16MP Sony back-illuminated sensor that delivers excellent video quality with true-to-life colors and exceptionally vibrant photos. Priced around $119, it includes a robust bundle of accessories like rotating mounts and a waterproof case. The camera boasts a highly stable, intuitive user interface alongside a reliable WiFi connection and companion app that facilitates fast file transfers reaching 2MB/s. Additionally, its 900mAh battery yields strong performance, offering up to 120 minutes of continuous recording at 1080p at 30fps. However, the review highlights several major drawbacks, most notably false advertising regarding its frame rates; the 4K setting is interpolated, and the high-speed 720p@120fps and VGA@240fps modes simply use doubled frames. Low-light performance is also a weak point, suffering from a heavy amount of image noise, a lack of fine details, and a drop in actual recording frame rates at night. While the built-in Gyro sensor provides excellent electronic image stabilization, it reduces the overall field of view and causes motion blurring under intense shaking. Other minor quirks include a slight...

The SJCAM M20 is a lightweight, 55-gram action camera that serves well as an affordable option for drone mounting, dash cam use, or general video recording. Priced at under £80 ($119), its major strengths include an excellent selection of inbox accessories—such as both open and 30-meter waterproof housings, adhesive mounts, and a belt clip—as well as built-in Wi-Fi compatibility with iOS and Android apps. It features highly effective gyro stabilisation that delivers smooth, steady footage when recording in its true 1080p resolution at 60fps or its non-interpolated 2K mode. Additionally, the camera includes helpful driving-specific features like automatic loop recording, motion detection, and timestamping, alongside a removable 900mAh battery that can be cheaply replaced. However, the review highlights several distinct drawbacks, most notably that the device is advertised as a 4K camera but only delivers lower-quality interpolated 4K video. The overall image quality is mediocre; the Novatek chipset heavily compresses 1080p and 2K video files, which introduces distracting artefacts and smears fine details even when the camera is still. Photo performance is equally disappointing in both JPEG and RAW modes,...

The SJCAM M20 is a lightweight, 55g action camera designed as an affordable alternative to premium GoPro models, offering a Sony IMX lens, 2.5K recording (with 4K interpolation), gyro-based image stabilisation, and 16MP still photos. Priced competitively at around £79 ($95 / €89), it provides massive value by including 10 GoPro-compatible mounts and a 30-metre waterproof diving case right in the box. This feature-packed bundle makes it a highly accessible choice for budget-conscious users looking to capture stable action footage. In terms of performance, the camera shines with its solid build quality, reliable built-in image stabilisation, and remarkably lightweight design. However, the reviewer noted a couple of distinct drawbacks, specifically pointing out that the camera completely lacks a port cover to protect its inputs and only delivers average battery life. While the bundled waterproof case proved durable during rigorous testing, the camera's standalone flaws require careful handling when used outside of its protective shell.

The SJCAM M20 is an ultra-compact and lightweight action camera weighing just 55 grams, making it highly suitable for applications like drone piloting and model making. Equipped with a Sony IMX206 image sensor and a Novatek 96660 processor, it delivers impressive overall video and photo quality with natural, vivid colours, clean details, and low image noise in good lighting. The camera excels at smooth light-to-dark transitions and features extensive shooting modes and manual configuration settings. Additionally, it comes packaged with a rich assortment of 13 accessories, including a multifunctional clip holder and a waterproof case that protects the device up to 30 metres underwater. However, the review highlights several distinct drawbacks, most notably an outdated smartphone app that lags by 1–2 seconds and artificially limits the recording resolution to 2K instead of the camera's actual capabilities. While the internal audio quality is convincing on its own, it becomes muffled and barely audible when the camera is placed inside the waterproof housing. The built-in digital gyro stabilization helps smooth out handheld footage but compromises clarity by making fine details look slightly...
