GoPro HERO 2018 Review | 96 Data compared

The ePHOTOzine review highlights the GoPro HERO (2018) as a rugged, waterproof ( 1 0 m ) entry-level camera offering a 2-inch touchscreen and compatibility with over 30 mounts, serving as a budget-friendly option for casual users. It provides sharp 1440p/1080p video, good color, and reliable, easy-to-use digital stabilization for activities like cycling. Key compromises to achieve the lower price point include the lack of 4K recording, a 10MP maximum resolution, and the absence of the advanced GP1 processor. The review notes that while great in daylight, it struggles with exposure in mixed lighting and features an sometimes unresponsive voice control system.

The 2018 GoPro Hero is a rugged, entry-level action camera designed for casual users who want dependable 1080p video capture without paying for complex 4K features. It features the exact same waterproof and durable body design as the more expensive Hero 5 and Hero 6 models, ensuring compatibility with existing GoPro frames and accessories while remaining waterproof down to 10 metres without a separate housing. Standout advantages include a clear 2-inch rear touchscreen, an intuitive and simplified user interface, responsive voice control capabilities, and loud, easily audible status beeps. Additionally, it includes a removable 1220mAh battery, useful low-light automation, and reliable multi-microphone electronic image stabilisation. However, the budget price point results in several functional compromises. Its video resolution maxes out at 1440p in a 4:3 aspect ratio, meaning standard 16:9 widescreen video is restricted purely to 1080p. The device lacks built-in GPS tracking, does not support external microphone inputs, and relies on a downgraded 10MP camera sensor. Advanced creators will find the camera limiting due to the complete omission of Protune mode, RAW photo support, and exposure adjustments, which can...

The GoPro Hero (2018) is a budget-friendly action camera that mimics the exact physical design, 2-inch touchscreen, and 10-meter waterproof body of its more expensive siblings, the Hero5 and Hero6 Black, without requiring an external case. Designed for users who prioritize simplicity over complex technical specifications, it records H.264 video up to 1,920 x 1,440 resolution at 60fps. Key strengths highlighted in the review include its highly effective Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) that eliminates the need for a gimbal, excellent audio quality driven by a three-microphone array, and natural-looking colors that adjust well to changing exposures. However, the camera makes several noticeable compromises to achieve its competitive £200 price point. Its main drawbacks are the lack of 4K video recording capabilities and a complete absence of GPS functionality. Furthermore, still photography performance is underwhelming, producing dull, 10-megapixel photos that lack fine detail and cannot be shot in RAW format. The device also omits advanced manual settings like "ProTune," meaning users cannot manually lock the ISO or adjust shutter speeds to combat grainy footage in low-light environments. Ultimately, it serves as...

The GoPro Hero (2018) is a user-friendly, entry-level action camera designed for beginners and budget-conscious creators. It adopts the refined, premium chassis of the more expensive Hero5 and Hero6 Black models, granting it natural waterproofing up to 33 feet (10 metres) without an external case, as well as a highly functional 2.0-inch rear touchscreen. Key pros highlighted in the review include its highly intuitive voice control interface, simple operations, and a polished QuikStories mobile app that makes editing and transferring files effortless. Furthermore, despite lacking 4K capabilities, it delivers very smooth, clean, and well-exposed Full HD 1080p footage bolstered by reliable built-in image stabilisation. However, the camera makes several compromises to keep the price accessible, resulting in notable cons. The device completely omits 4K video recording, capping maximum resolutions at 1080p or a 1440p mode that awkwardly forces a 4:3 aspect ratio. Advanced shooters will also be disappointed by the complete removal of ProTune settings, which deprives users of manual exposure, white balance, or color profile controls. Additionally, there are no lower-resolution recording options beneath Full HD, and the 10MP...

The 2018 GoPro Hero is a budget-friendly, entry-level action camera that shares the exact same rugged, waterproof body (up to 10 metres) and physical design as the higher-end Hero 5 and Hero 6 models. Because it shares their shape, it is highly durable, easy to use, and fits standard GoPro accessories, though it sadly leaves out support for the Karma Grip handheld stabiliser. It features a simple touchscreen menu and stripped-down shooting choices—like standard video, still photos, time-lapses, and photo bursts. This lack of complex options is a huge pro for casual users who want a camera without a steep learning curve. Plus, it has a solid battery life of over an hour and pairs quickly with smartphones for fast video transfers. However, the lower price tag means several significant compromises in video and photo performance. It maxes out at 1080p and 1440p resolutions at 60fps, missing out on 4K Ultra-HD capture, HDR still photos, and slow-motion modes entirely. While daytime videos look good enough for social media, low-light filming and time-lapses suffer from washed-out colours and a loss of...

The GoPro Hero (2018) is a rugged, entry-level action camera featuring a waterproof design (up to 10m) and a 2-inch touchscreen, making it user-friendly for casual, budget-conscious users. It offers 1440p video, decent image stabilization, and seamless app integration for easy sharing. However, the camera lacks 4K resolution, GPS, and ProTune manual controls, capping photo performance at 10 megapixels and limiting advanced, creative, or high-fidelity shooting options.
