What we like about AMD Ryzen 3 2300X

  • Great overclocking potential due to an unlocked multiplier, with some users reaching over 4.3 GHz
  • Strong value-to-performance ratio for budget builds and light gaming
  • Low latency in core-to-core communication because all four cores reside on a single CCX
  • Decent gaming performance for 1080p when paired with a suitable mid-range GPU like the GTX 1060
  • Lower power consumption and better thermal efficiency compared to older budget architectures

What we don't like about AMD Ryzen 3 2300X

  • Limited to 4 cores and 4 threads with no SMT (multithreading), which causes bottlenecks in modern multi-threaded applications
  • Small L3 cache (8MB) compared to Ryzen 5 counterparts, which can limit gaming performance
  • No integrated graphics, requiring the purchase of a separate dedicated graphics card
  • No longer competitive with newer budget CPUs that offer more threads and better single-core speed
  • Difficult to find as a standalone part because it was originally released only for pre-built systems (OEM)

Verdict

The AMD Ryzen 3 2300X is an entry-level quad-core desktop processor from the 12nm 'Pinnacle Ridge' (Zen+) family, featuring 4 cores and 4 threads with a base clock of 3.5 GHz and a max boost of 4.0 GHz. Built for the AM4 socket, it includes 8MB of L3 cache, supports dual-channel DDR4-2933 memory, and has a 65W TDP. Main pros include its unlocked multiplier for easy overclocking, high value for budget 1080p gaming, and low core-to-core latency due to its single CCX design. However, significant cons include the lack of simultaneous multithreading (SMT), the absence of integrated graphics—requiring a discrete GPU—and its limited availability as a primarily OEM-targeted chip that is now outperformed by newer budget alternatives with more threads.
