Reviews last updated: May 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about ASUS Z97 A

  • Excellent value for money in the mid-range segment
  • Intuitive and mature UEFI BIOS with easy navigation
  • Impressive 5-Way Optimization for automatic overclocking
  • Solid connectivity including M.2 and SATA Express support
  • High-quality Intel Gigabit Ethernet (i218-V) for stable networking
  • Onboard hardware switches (EZ XMP, TPU, EPU) for quick tuning
  • Good cooling performance on VRMs and PCH heatsinks

What we don't like about ASUS Z97 A

  • Aesthetic design (brown PCB and gold heatsinks) is polarizing
  • Uses the older Realtek ALC892 audio codec compared to higher-end models
  • I/O shield is noted to feel somewhat cheap/basic
  • Heatsinks are not connected by heatpipes, which may affect extreme loads
  • M.2 slot speed is limited compared to modern NVMe standards (PCIe 2.0 x2)
  • Included accessories are minimal (only 3 SATA cables)

Verdict

The ASUS Z97-A is a versatile ATX motherboard built on the Intel Z97 Express chipset, supporting 4th, New 4th, and 5th Generation Intel Core processors via the LGA1150 socket. It features four DDR3 DIMM slots for up to 32GB of memory (overclocked to 3200MHz), two PCIe 3.0 x16 slots with SLI and CrossFireX support, and modern storage options including an M.2 Socket 3 and a 10Gb/s SATA Express port. Key pros include the comprehensive 5-Way Optimization for one-click system tuning, high-quality Crystal Sound 2 audio, and 5X Protection hardware safeguards for long-term durability. However, notable cons include the shared bandwidth between the M.2 slot and PCIe x1 slots, which disables the latter when an M.2 drive is in use, and a smaller chipset heatsink that may run warmer during intensive tasks.
