What we like about Beyerdynamic M 90 Pro X

  • Excellent sound quality: Provides a warm, detailed and balanced sound (rich bass, balanced mids, clear highs) that often requires no post-processing.
  • Complete accessories: Comes with useful accessories such as an elastic shock mount, a pop filter and a neoprene bag.
  • Lightweight: Despite its considerable size, the microphone is very light (approx. 296 g), making it easy to use with various microphone arms.
  • High-quality build: Solid construction and an attractive, understated design.
  • Good value for money: Considered an affordable all-in-one package for studio and home recordings.

What we don't like about Beyerdynamic M 90 Pro X

  • Sensitive to plosives: Tends to produce pop noises when used very close to the mouth, so using the included pop filter is essential.
  • Shock mount sensitivity: The included mount is made of plastic and should be handled carefully when screwing it on to avoid damaging the brass thread.
  • No controls on the microphone: The device has no built-in switches or controls, such as Low-Cut or Pad.
  • Featherweight feel: The very low weight may initially feel less premium to some users, even though it makes handling on a microphone arm easier.

Verdict

The Beyerdynamic M90 Pro X is a large-diaphragm side-address condenser microphone featuring a 34mm true condenser capsule and a fixed cardioid polar pattern. It offers a wide frequency response of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, a high maximum sound pressure level of 133 dB, and an exceptionally low self-noise floor of 5.6 dB(A). Main characteristics include a detailed and warm sound profile with an articulate upper-mid lift, a robust aluminum housing, and gold-plated XLR connectors. Key pros include its versatile performance for both vocals and instruments, high sensitivity (36.3 mV/Pa) that works well with entry-level interfaces, and a complete accessory package containing a shock mount and dual-layer pop filter. Notable cons include the lack of onboard switches for low-cut filters or pads, a slightly bulky design that can complicate tight positioning, and a colored off-axis response that makes it less suitable for ambient or overhead applications.
