What we like about Sennheiser HD 558

  • Exceptional long-term comfort with soft velour ear pads and lightweight design
  • Spacious and immersive soundstage, making them excellent for gaming and movies
  • Balanced, natural sound signature that excels with laid-back genres like jazz and classical
  • Durable build quality featuring a detachable and easily replaceable cable
  • Revealing mid-range and clear instrument separation for critical listening
  • Low impedance makes them easy to drive without a dedicated amplifier

What we don't like about Sennheiser HD 558

  • Open-back design leaks sound and provides virtually no noise isolation
  • Lacks deep sub-bass punch, which may disappoint fans of EDM or hip-hop
  • Stock cable terminates in a large 1/4 inch plug, requiring a bulky and clunky 3.5mm adapter for mobile use
  • Proprietary locking mechanism on the headphone end limits third-party cable compatibility
  • Bass can occasionally sound slightly muddy or bloated in the mid-bass region
  • Treble is relatively 'veiled' and lacks the sparkle found in higher-end models

Verdict

The Sennheiser HD 558 is an open-back, circumaural audiophile headphone featuring a frequency response of 15Hz to 28,000Hz and a 50-ohm impedance, making it efficient enough to be driven by most consumer devices. It utilizes Sennheiser's Ergonomic Acoustic Refinement (E.A.R.) technology with angled internal drivers to create an expansive, detailed soundstage and natural tonal balance. Main characteristics include a lightweight plastic chassis weighing 260g, premium velour ear pads for long-session comfort, and a 3-metre detachable cable with a proprietary twist-and-lock 2.5mm connector. Pros include its exceptionally smooth mid-range, superior instrument separation, and the highly-regarded 'foam mod' potential that can further open up the sound signature. However, cons include a significant sub-bass roll-off that may disappoint bass enthusiasts, an oversized and clunky 6.3mm-to-3.5mm adapter, and an open design that naturally leaks audio, making it unsuitable for quiet public environments.
