Kobo Clara Bw Review | 68 Data compared

The TechRadar review of the Kobo Clara BW praises it as a top-tier, compact 6-inch e-reader featuring the advanced E Ink Carta 1300 display for superior contrast, sharpness, and faster response times. It offers a robust reading experience with IPX8 waterproofing and an improved, user-repairable design, though the build itself is described as functional, utilitarian, and somewhat plain plastic. While it delivers a faster performance and excellent screen, limitations include a lack of cloud storage integration (like Google Drive) and a screen size that may be too small for some users' preferences.

The Kobo Clara BW is a compact e-reader featuring the E Ink Carta 1300 display, offering improved contrast and a 25-27% faster response time compared to previous models. Its 6-inch, 300 PPI glare-free screen ensures crisp text, complemented by IPX8 waterproofing for durability and built-in Bluetooth for audiobooks. The device emphasizes sustainability with repairable components via iFixit, and it includes ComfortLight PRO for adjustable color temperature. While lauded for its screen, the device lacks physical page-turn buttons, and some users may find the 6-inch display restrictive compared to larger alternatives. Additionally, it lacks advanced cloud storage integration, and the 16GB storage with a 1GHz processor is adequate but not a major performance jump. Overall, the Clara BW is a dedicated, high-performance black-and-white e-reader, ideal for users prioritizing screen quality and portability over stylus support or color.

The Kobo Clara BW is a compact 6-inch e-reader featuring a Carta 1300 E Ink display that offers high contrast, sharpness, and fast performance. It boasts IPX8 water resistance, ComfortLight PRO for color temperature adjustment, and built-in OverDrive support for library books. Key advantages include its lightweight design, repairability in partnership with iFixit, and an ad-free user interface. Conversely, potential drawbacks include a plastic casing that can feel budget-oriented, a basic audiobook interface, and a 6-inch screen size that may be too small for some users or for reading PDFs.

The eBook Reader finds the Kobo Clara BW faster at page turns and navigation, but not a meaningful upgrade. Its sharp 6-inch Carta 1300 screen disappoints on contrast claims, as Clara 2E text looks darker in direct comparisons. Otherwise, the device closely follows its predecessor, with only minor changes to the design and no software improvements. The review values its compact size, 16 GB storage, waterproofing, Bluetooth audiobook support and parts that users can replace. It considers the Clara BW a capable, good-value choice for readers who prefer ordinary text on a black-and-white screen. However, owners of a Clara 2E have little reason to switch, since the new model changes the experience so little.

Good e-Reader calls the Kobo Clara BW one of the best black-and-white e-readers in Kobo’s range and says it outperforms the Clara 2E and Nia. Its 6-inch Carta 1300 screen offers 300 ppi, Dark Mode and a recessed, glass-free surface that the reviewer says reduces glare and makes text stand out. The display is reported to be 25% more responsive than the Clara 2E, though the article says side-by-side users may see few gains. ComfortLight PRO, IPX8 water protection, Bluetooth audiobook playback and 16 GB of storage add useful flexibility. The review also highlights recycled materials and the partnership with iFixit for replacement parts, while noting that battery use can shorten reading time.
