Review · Backlit e-reader
Verdict
The Bookeen Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight has a sharp screen and solid build, but no English dictionary and few English books make it hard to recommend over the Kindle Paperwhite.

The Bookeen Cybook Odyssey HD Frontlight suits dark reading with its sharp screen, but the display rotates the wrong way at random and the Kindle Paperwhite is the stronger pick.

Verdict
The Bookeen Cybook Odyssey suits patient readers, since its screen is slower than a tablet's, and the company was bought out, so its readers are no longer sold.

Third-party reviews

What we like about Bookeen Cybook Odyssey Hd Frontlight

  • Excellent front light technology that illuminates evenly and is easy on the eyes.
  • High-quality industrial design using a mix of brushed aluminium and plastic.
  • Superior PDF handling with quick loading, manual zoom controls, and reflow options.
  • Highly responsive HSIS (High-Speed Ink System) scrolling and fast page turns.
  • Extensive text customisation, including the ability to load custom fonts and adjust line spacing.
  • Physical page turn buttons in addition to the touchscreen.
  • Rare 'night mode' feature (white text on black background) for a softer reading experience.

What we don't like about Bookeen Cybook Odyssey Hd Frontlight

  • Lack of a built-in English-to-English dictionary, which is a major drawback for English speakers.
  • Built-in bookstore is heavily focused on French content and lacks a good selection for UK/English users.
  • Sluggish and clunky web browser performance.
  • Library management is weak, lacking true ebook collection organisation.
  • Capacitive touchscreen can be unresponsive or prone to interference in damp conditions.
  • Price point was historically higher than competitors like the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite.

Verdict

The Bookeen Cybook Odyssey HD Frontlight is a 180g e-reader featuring a 6-inch E Ink Pearl capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1024 x 758 (212 ppi) and a built-in 20-level LED front-lighting system for night reading. Powered by an 800 MHz Cortex A8 processor with 128 MB of RAM, it includes 2 GB of internal storage (expandable by 32 GB via microSD), Wi-Fi connectivity, and a 1600 mAh battery lasting up to a month. Key advantages include its unique HSIS scrolling technology for fast screen refreshes, physical page-turn buttons, an integrated accelerometer for automatic orientation, and robust PDF reflow capabilities; however, notable drawbacks include a lack of an English-centric built-in bookstore, a slightly yellowish screen tint when the light is off, and a higher launch price compared to some contemporary rivals.
