Amazon Kindle 2024 Review | 68 Data compared

The 2024 Amazon Kindle functions as a minor refresh of the 11th Gen model, featuring a 25% brighter screen and faster page turns, though these changes are subtle. Retaining a 300 PPI 6-inch display, 16GB storage, and USB-C, it adds a new "Matcha" green color option, aiming to provide a basic, refined reading experience. With a $199 Australian price point, the unit serves as an entry-level device, though the higher cost makes the $299 Paperwhite a strong alternative. Pros include its highly portable, "pocketable" size and its status as the most affordable Kindle, while significant cons include lack of waterproofing, missing warm lighting, and a slower processor. Ultimately, the review suggests this model is suited for new users on a budget rather than as an upgrade for 2022 owners. While a capable, distraction-free "book bunker," the 2024 Kindle lacks the premium features and durability of higher-end options, serving as an entry point into the Amazon ecosystem. The 2024 entry-level Amazon Kindle, weighing only 158 grams, remains the most compact and affordable option in the lineup, now featuring a new Matcha Green color option. Performance enhancements include a 6-inch, 300 ppi display that is 25% brighter at maximum settings, alongside 10% faster page turns. However, the device lacks premium features such as waterproofing, adjustable warm light, and auto-brightness sensors found in the Paperwhite, coupled with a $10 price increase to $109.99.

The 2024 Amazon Kindle is highlighted as a highly portable, entry-level e-reader featuring a lightweight 158g design, a new Matcha green color option, and a 25% brighter 300ppi 6-inch display. It offers faster performance with 16GB of storage and USB-C charging, providing up to six weeks of battery life. However, it lacks premium features such as waterproofing, adjustable warm light, and a flush screen design, with a raised bezel and bottom-placed power button. Despite these limitations, it is recommended for its value-driven, distraction-free reading experience.

The 2024 Amazon Kindle, priced at a $10 increase, remains a highly portable, entry-level e-reader featuring a 6-inch, 300ppi E Ink display that is 25% brighter at 94 nits. Key pros include its exceptionally compact design and consistent white screen lighting, available in black or a new "Matcha" green. Cons include the absence of waterproofing and an adjustable warm light, which are reserved for higher-end models. While offering 16GB of storage, this model is noted for being slower with occasional menu lag, and it provides a 6-week battery life, which is significantly less than the Paperwhite. PCMag concludes this is a solid choice for budget-conscious readers, though it represents only a minor upgrade over the previous version. The review recommends the Paperwhite's superior performance and larger screen for most users, making this base model a strictly minimalist option.

The TechRadar reviewer calls the 2024 Kindle a version 2.0 of the 2022 model, with little that is truly new. The Matcha Green colour is a delight, but the smooth rear panel feels slippery on public transport. The screen appears to be the same E Ink Carta 1200 panel, which gives less contrast than newer Carta 1300 screens. Storage stays at 16GB, of which only 11.5GB is usable, and there is still no waterproofing. Performance is a touch faster and more responsive, with no ghosting. The verdict: the tester struggles to justify the price increase over the 2022 model.

Pocket-lint presents the Amazon Kindle 2024 through a reviewer who resisted electronic readers for more than a decade. She particularly likes its portability, since it fits her purse's smallest front pocket and even her jeans' back pocket. The quick page turns helped her maintain her usual reading speed despite the smaller screen on this model. She finished a novel of 479 pages in just under nine hours, much as she would on her Paperwhite. The front light offers 25 percent higher maximum brightness and makes the screen easy to see in low light. However, its blue tint may bother readers with sensitive eyes, and the reviewer considers it less suitable for beach reading.

MakeUseOf describes the Amazon Kindle 2024 as a minor refresh, with little meaningful change from the previous 2022 model. The display offers 25 percent higher brightness, and the reviewer welcomes Matcha green as a new colour option. He prefers brightness level 18, which feels bright enough outdoors but remains comfortable for reading books in bed. Its compact size, light weight, 16 GB storage and USB-C connection make the reader easy to carry on trips. Amazon's six-week battery claim assumes 30 minutes daily at brightness 13, equivalent to around 21 hours of reading. The reviewer appreciates these strengths but doubts that the modest update will impress anyone who already uses a Kindle.

Mashable calls the basic Kindle 2024 a phenomenal value and praises how small and light it is. The reviewer thinks the 6-inch screen may be the ideal size, carries the Kindle in a small crossbody bag and holds it for hours without a tired wrist. Page turns are swift, and the display has gained contrast, so words and images look sharper. The plastic build feels cheaper than the Paperwhite, and the poorly placed power button causes many accidental presses. Mashable also points out two letdowns: a six-week battery against twelve weeks on the Paperwhite, and no waterproofing.
