Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24 70mm F 2 8G ED Review | 54 Data compared

The Photography Life review identifies the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G as a durable, weather-sealed, and fast-focusing workhorse, often praised for its professional-grade build and excellent color rendering. Key advantages include strong center sharpness when stopped down to f/5.6-f/11, reliable performance in challenging conditions, and a 77mm filter size that works well with circular systems. On the downside, the lens exhibits significant wide-open issues, including noticeable corner softness, heavy vignetting, and strong barrel distortion at 24mm. Additional disadvantages include a lack of built-in VR stabilization, field curvature that compromises edge sharpness at 70mm, and a tendency for the zoom ring to be stiff or for the barrel to creep when held vertically.

The ePHOTOzine review highlights the Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED as a robust, professional-grade lens offering exceptional sharpness, high contrast, and fast, accurate autofocus. Notable performance benefits include superior image quality across the zoom range and effective Nano-Crystal coating that reduces flare, making it a reliable workhorse for demanding photographers. Key drawbacks identified in the review include significant barrel distortion at the 24mm setting and a heavy, 900-gram design that can make handheld shooting tiring over long periods. Furthermore, the premium, high-cost investment of over £1200 makes this lens a better choice for professionals prioritizing pure performance over cost-effectiveness.

The Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED is described by Ken Rockwell as a top-tier mid-range zoom, praised for its exceptional sharpness across the frame, fast Silent Wave Motor (SWM) autofocus, and robust construction with a metal mount. Key pros include a constant f/2.8 aperture, minimal distortion, and professional-grade performance suitable for event photography, often touted as a significant upgrade over older models. Conversely, the lens is noted for its heavy and large, 900g design, which may be cumbersome for casual use. Further drawbacks highlighted include the lack of Vibration Reduction (VR), a high price point, and a fragile lens hood, leading to it being characterized more as a heavy-duty professional tool rather than an everyday lens.

The AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED is reviewed as a highly essential, professional-grade workhorse zoom lens that serves as a cornerstone tool for landscape, travel, and portrait photography. The review highlights several notable pros, including its exceptionally fast, quiet autofocus performance and pristine glass that resolves light and color with extreme precision. It provides a constant f/2.8 aperture across all focal lengths, offering edge-to-edge sharpness that Nikon claims rivals that of contemporary prime lenses. Ergonomically, the lens is lauded for its rugged, streamlined construction capable of taking heavy field abuse, alongside comfortable, generously sized rubber treads for seamless manual focusing and zooming. However, the review details a few notable mechanical and optical cons that users should consider before purchasing. The packaged plastic HB-40 lens hood is criticized for being big, clunky, and prone to accidentally unscrewing during use—often requiring gaffer tape to remain securely locked. Over four years of heavy field testing, the reviewer also experienced minor build issues, such as the rubber zoom grip coming undone and shifting out of its metal track. Finally, stacking standard 77mm filters triggers...

The What Digital Camera review by Jon Tarrant praises the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED as a highly impressive, professional-grade zoom lens that delivers exceptional results. A major pro highlighted in the review is its outstanding image quality, with MTF curves staying consistently high across all tested apertures and focal lengths, peaking beautifully between f/5.6 and f/16. The lens also excels at minimizing chromatic aberration, which remains at remarkably low levels at the wide-angle end and disappears entirely above 50mm. Furthermore, its Silent-Wave Motor (SWM) is a standout success, providing blisteringly quick, accurate, and incredibly quiet autofocus performance. On the downside, the reviewer notes that the considerable length of the lens hurts its physical ergonomics, occasionally resulting in an unbalanced feel if the photographer uses a rearward grip to operate the zoom ring. A more frustrating con of this elongated design is its tendency to cast an unsightly semi-circle shadow at the bottom of the frame when using a camera's built-in pop-up flashgun. While the reviewer admits that professional shooters rarely rely on pop-up flashes, this limitation remains a...

The Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED is a highly versatile, professional-grade standard zoom lens built like a tank, offering a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout its entire focal range. It is praised for its exceptional sharpness in the center of the frame, robust military-grade build quality, and incredibly fast, accurate autofocus that excels even in low-light, low-contrast environments. Its multi-purpose 24-70mm range makes it a powerful, all-around tool highly recommended for landscape, sports, wedding, and environmental portrait photographers who need to adapt quickly without changing lenses. However, the lens has several distinct drawbacks, most notably its massive, heavy, and bulky footprint, weighing nearly two pounds (900 grams) and coming at a steep financial price. In terms of optical performance, it suffers from pronounced barrel distortion and noticeable light falloff (vignetting) at the wide 24mm end, alongside some softness in the corners when shot at wider apertures. Additionally, it exhibits longitudinal chromatic aberration (color fringing around high-contrast edges) and has decent but unexceptional bokeh that lacks the creamy subject-isolation found in specialized prime lenses.

The Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 is a top-tier professional mid-range zoom lens favored by wedding and event photographers for its superb build quality, fast autofocus, and great contrast and saturation enhanced by Nano Crystal Coat. Its primary strength lies in its immense convenience and versatility, allowing users to quickly pull back to a wide 24mm for group shots or zoom into 70mm for portraits with a single twist of the ring. Designed with an all-metal construction, ED elements to minimize color fringing, and aspherical elements to control distortion, this robust lens is built to withstand heavy daily use in fast-paced environments where changing prime lenses would mean missing critical moments. However, the lens comes with several drawbacks, most notably its high price tag of over $1,500 and its hefty weight of around 900g, making it impractical as a casual walk-around lens. Optically, it suffers from noticeable barrel distortion at 24mm that requires software correction. Crucially, the reviewer highlights that buyers are paying for convenience rather than absolute peak sharpness; much cheaper and lighter alternatives, like the Nikon 50mm f/1.8G, actually resolve...
