Skullcandy Cassette Review | 93 Data compared

The Skullcandy Cassette on-ear headphones are entry-level, highly versatile cans designed specifically for the action-sports niche, such as snowboarding and skating. Their standout feature is a modular design with a removable headband and plastic speaker pods that can be popped out and slipped directly into compatible hoodies, beanie hats, or ski helmets. They are incredibly portable, lightweight, and come with a standard 3.93-foot detachable Y-shaped cable featuring an integrated smartphone remote and microphone. While constructed primarily out of cheap plastic, the headphones offer surprisingly good tracking between channels, minimal audible distortion, and durable flexibility that makes them safe to use outside the ear canal during high-impact outdoor activities. However, the primary trade-off for this extreme versatility and affordable pricing is poor overall audio quality. The headphones suffer from a massive bass drop-off at around 90Hz, overemphasized mid-frequencies, and an erratic high-end response, making them a poor fit for anyone who values high-fidelity sound or deep bass. Additional cons include high sound leakage, meaning they will easily disturb people around you at higher volumes, and poor noise isolation when used traditionally...

The Skullcandy Cassette headphones are highlighted for their incredible physical versatility, engineered specifically to cater to skateboarders and snowboarders. The core pros include their unique modular design, which allows the speaker elements to be completely detached from the headband and easily dropped into compatible snowboarding helmets, beanies, or hoodies. Additionally, they are extremely lightweight, highly portable, and offer a comfortable, unobtrusive experience when worn outside the ear canal—reducing the risk of painful ear injuries during outdoor activities. The cable is also fully removable and features a convenient built-in microphone and remote. In contrast, the overwhelming cons center around the headphones' sub-par audio performance and poor isolation properties. The sound profile suffers from a massive volume drop-off below 90Hz, meaning bass lovers will find the lower end practically inaudible. Furthermore, there is a severe 20dB over-emphasis in the upper mid-range frequencies between 1kHz and 2kHz, causing instruments like flutes and guitars to sound up to four times louder than they should, completely drowning out remaining sub-bass frequencies. Finally, when used with the standard headband, they fail to block out ambient low...

The Skullcandy Cassette is a budget-friendly pair of on-ear wireless headphones priced at €40 that offers high durability and a lightweight, comfortable design. Reviewer Jim O Brien highlights that the headset features an impressive build quality for its price, surviving a flexibility "twist test" without any creaks or snapping. The physical controls are clustered on one side, rubber-coated, and well-raised, allowing for easy, tactile navigation. Key functional pros include solid volume and playback mapping, seamless Bluetooth connectivity up to 10 meters, lack of audio latency on streaming apps like Netflix, voice assistant access, and a strong quick-charge feature that delivers 2 hours of playback in 10 minutes. Sound quality is described as good and bass-oriented across various music genres. However, the headphones do come with several notable limitations due to their entry-level positioning. On the physical side, they feature smaller on-ear earcups rather than a full over-ear design, and the top leather headband cushion is noticeably thinner than premium models like the Skullcandy Crusher range. Technologically, the Cassette completely lacks advanced audio features such as Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) or...

The Skullcandy Cassette wireless on-ear headphones are positioned as a high-value $30 option, offering a blend of Bluetooth connectivity and a 3.5mm auxiliary input for wired, non-powered listening. Key advantages include a robust 22-hour battery life, fast-charging capabilities that provide two hours of playback from a 10-minute charge, and a versatile, durable design. Medium· Conversely, the review highlights the use of an outdated micro-USB port for charging rather than modern USB-C as a significant drawback. Furthermore, the total battery longevity is highly dependent on volume levels, and the overall sound performance is considered average for the price point.
