Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Venus Optics Laowa 9mm F 2 8 Zero-D

  • Extremely compact and lightweight (only 215g / 7.6 oz)
  • Excellent all-metal build quality and sturdy feel
  • Negligible rectilinear distortion (Zero-D performance)
  • Outstanding center sharpness, even when shot wide open
  • Accepts standard 49mm screw-in filters, which is rare for such a wide lens
  • Very close minimum focusing distance (approx. 0.4 feet / 12 cm)
  • Fast f/2.8 maximum aperture is great for astrophotography and low light

What we don't like about Venus Optics Laowa 9mm F 2 8 Zero-D

  • Heavy vignetting (up to 3-4 stops) that never fully disappears even when stopped down
  • Manual focus and manual aperture only (no electronic contacts for EXIF data)
  • Corner sharpness is noticeably soft at f/2.8 and requires stopping down to f/5.6-f/8 to improve
  • Aperture ring typically moves in full-stop clicks rather than half-stops
  • Prone to lens flare and ghosting when shooting against strong light sources
  • Lacks weather sealing for use in harsh environments
  • Some users find the lens hood can be slightly loose or difficult to snap on tightly

Verdict

The Venus Optics Laowa 9mm f/2.8 Zero-D is a compact ultra-wide prime lens built for APS-C and Micro Four Thirds mirrorless systems, featuring an optical structure of 15 elements in 10 groups, including 2 aspherical and 3 extra-low dispersion elements. Key advantages include an expansive 113° angle of view, a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture, a minimum focusing distance of 12 cm, standard 49mm filter threads, and near-zero optical distortion packaged in a lightweight 215g all-metal housing. However, main drawbacks include its fully manual focus and aperture control design, lack of weather sealing, electronic contacts, or image stabilization, along with noticeable vignetting and softer corner performance when shot wide open.
