Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Tamron 55 200mm F 4 5 6 Di II

  • Extremely affordable price point, offering a high price-to-performance ratio
  • Lightweight and compact design (approx. 300g), making it highly portable for travel
  • Good center sharpness and resolution, especially between 55mm and 135mm
  • Vibrant color rendition and good contrast for a budget-level lens
  • Includes a lens hood in the box, which is not always standard for budget models
  • Capable of decent close-up (macro) shots with a 1:3.5 magnification ratio

What we don't like about Tamron 55 200mm F 4 5 6 Di II

  • Slow and noisy autofocus motor, making it poorly suited for fast action or sports
  • Notable loss of sharpness and 'soft' images when zoomed fully to 200mm
  • Lacks image stabilization (VC/VR), which can lead to camera shake at longer focal lengths
  • Plasticky build quality, including a plastic mount in many versions
  • Manual focus ring is very narrow and difficult to use precisely
  • Noticeable chromatic aberration and susceptibility to lens flare in high-contrast scenes

Verdict

The Tamron AF 55-200mm f/4-5.6 Di II LD Macro is a compact telephoto zoom lens designed specifically for APS-C digital SLR cameras, featuring a 13-element, 9-group optical construction with Low Dispersion (LD) glass to reduce chromatic aberration. Weighing approximately 295–300g and accepting a 52mm filter, it offers a versatile 3.6x zoom ratio and a minimum focusing distance of 0.95m for a maximum magnification of 1:3.5. Its main characteristics include extreme portability and a nine-blade diaphragm for smooth out-of-focus backgrounds, while its primary pros are exceptional center sharpness—particularly at the 55mm end—and a highly affordable price-to-performance ratio. However, its notable cons include a slow and noisy micro-motor autofocus system, the lack of built-in image stabilisation, and a plastic mount that may not suit heavy professional use.
