What we like about Sigma 30mm F1 4 DC DN C

  • Excellent center sharpness even when shot wide open at f/1.4
  • Affordable price point offering high value for money
  • Large f/1.4 aperture provides great low-light performance and shallow depth of field
  • Fast, accurate, and near-silent autofocus suitable for both stills and video
  • Compact and lightweight design, making it highly portable for APS-C systems
  • Smooth and pleasing bokeh quality

What we don't like about Sigma 30mm F1 4 DC DN C

  • Lack of built-in optical image stabilization (OSS)
  • Significant longitudinal chromatic aberration (purple fringing) at wide apertures
  • Noticeable barrel distortion that often requires software correction
  • Not fully weather-sealed, limiting use in harsh environments
  • Corners can be somewhat soft compared to the extremely sharp center at f/1.4

Verdict

The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary is a high-performance, compact prime lens designed for APS-C (45mm equivalent) and Micro Four Thirds (60mm equivalent) mirrorless systems. Key technical specifications include a bright f/1.4 maximum aperture, a 9-blade rounded diaphragm for smooth bokeh, and an optical construction of 9 elements in 7 groups including aspherical and high-refractive index elements. Main pros include exceptional center sharpness even wide open, a fast and quiet stepping motor for both stills and video, and a lightweight Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) build weighing approximately 265g. However, cons include noticeable barrel distortion and chromatic aberration in high-contrast scenes, the lack of built-in image stabilization, and limited weather sealing beyond a rubber gasket at the mount.
