What we like about Irix 45mm F 1 4

  • Excellent, heavy-duty build quality with durable weather sealing
  • Smooth, creamy, and highly appealing bokeh rendering
  • Beautiful and accurate color rendition with natural contrast
  • Highly impressive sharpness and contrast when stopped down
  • Well-damped manual focus ring with long, precise throw and focus lock feature
  • Excellent resistance against ghosting and flare
  • Very low, almost absent barrel distortion
  • UV-light reactive, luminescent engravings for easy reading in low light
  • Reasonable and affordable price point compared to competitors

What we don't like about Irix 45mm F 1 4

  • No autofocus capabilities; manual focus only
  • Large, bulky, and heavily weighted design
  • Slight softness and spherical aberration haze in the center when shot wide-open at f/1.4
  • Significant vignetting and corner light fall-off, especially on medium-format sensors
  • Extremely shallow depth of field at f/1.4 makes precise focus peaking difficult
  • Focus lock mechanism does not fully lock and can slip under pressure
  • Rubberized focus ring easily attracts dust and small debris
  • Uncalibrated infinity focus stop allows users to accidentally focus past infinity

Verdict

The Irix 45mm f/1.4 Dragonfly is a manual-focus prime lens designed for full-frame cameras, featuring a unique 45mm focal length with a 51.4° diagonal angle of view and an optical construction of 11 elements in 9 groups. It is characterized by a robust, weather-sealed magnesium and composite housing, a 9-blade rounded diaphragm for smooth circular bokeh, a 140-degree focus ring throw with a mechanical focus lock, a 77mm filter thread, and a 0.4m minimum focusing distance. Main pros include exceptional build quality, electronic communication for camera-controlled aperture and focus confirmation, minimal chromatic aberration, and outstanding center-to-edge sharpness when stopped down. Main cons are its considerable weight of over 900 grams, noticeable vignetting wide open, a tendency to exhibit some softness and lower contrast in the center at f/1.4, and the lack of autofocus which may not suit fast-paced shooting scenarios.
