Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Fujifilm XF 16mm F 2 8 R WR

  • Extremely compact and lightweight, making it ideal for travel and street photography
  • Robust all-metal build quality with weather and dust resistance
  • Fast, quiet, and reliable autofocus driven by a stepping motor
  • Excellent center sharpness even when shooting wide open at f/2.8
  • Very affordable price point compared to other Fujinon wide-angle primes
  • Short minimum focusing distance (17cm) allows for versatile close-up shots

What we don't like about Fujifilm XF 16mm F 2 8 R WR

  • Noticeable softness in the corners, especially at wider apertures
  • Significant native barrel distortion that requires digital/in-camera correction
  • Heavy vignetting at f/2.8, though it improves significantly by f/5.6
  • Slower f/2.8 maximum aperture limits performance in very low light compared to the f/1.4 variant
  • Sun stars are not as well-defined as those produced by higher-end lenses

Verdict

The Fujifilm XF 16mm f/2.8 R WR is a compact wide-angle prime lens offering a 24mm full-frame equivalent focal length, featuring a construction of 10 elements in 8 groups, including two aspherical elements to minimize aberrations. Weighing just 155g and measuring 45.4mm in length, it is highly portable and features a robust metal exterior with weather sealing at nine points to ensure durability in harsh conditions. Its main advantages include a fast and silent stepping motor for rapid autofocus, excellent center sharpness, and an intuitive physical aperture ring, making it a favorite for street and travel photography. However, users may find its corners softer when shot wide open at f/2.8, and it lacks optical image stabilization, which can be a drawback in low-light environments without a stabilized camera body.
