Third-party reviews

Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Sigma 16mm F 1 4 DC DN Micro Four Thirds

  • Excellent value for money and high price-to-performance ratio
  • Fast f/1.4 aperture provides great low-light performance and creamy bokeh
  • High optical sharpness, especially when stopped down slightly
  • Fast, quiet, and reliable autofocus suitable for both stills and video
  • Solid build quality with dust and splash resistance at the mount
  • Effective flare and ghosting control for shooting in backlit conditions
  • Minimal focus breathing, which is highly beneficial for videography

What we don't like about Sigma 16mm F 1 4 DC DN Micro Four Thirds

  • Large and bulky size compared to native Micro Four Thirds prime lenses
  • Lack of built-in optical image stabilization (OIS)
  • Noticeable longitudinal chromatic aberration (color fringing) when shot wide open
  • Wide-open sharpness can be slightly soft in the corners at f/1.4
  • No physical switches on the lens body (e.g., AF/MF or aperture ring)
  • Can feel unbalanced on smaller, rangefinder-style camera bodies

Verdict

The Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary lens for Micro Four Thirds provides a 32mm full-frame equivalent focal length with a 16-element-in-13-groups optical design, featuring a 9-blade rounded diaphragm and a 67mm filter thread. Key pros include its ultra-fast f/1.4 maximum aperture for excellent low-light performance, a 25cm minimum focusing distance, dust- and splash-resistant construction, and a fast, quiet stepping autofocus motor ideal for both videography and photography. However, notable cons include its relatively large and front-heavy footprint for the compact Micro Four Thirds system, a lack of built-in optical image stabilization, and mild barrel distortion alongside corner softness when shooting completely wide open.
