Third-party reviews

Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Sigma 16mm F 1 4 DC DN C

  • Excellent low-light performance due to the bright f/1.4 aperture
  • Phenomenal sharpness and clarity, especially when stopped down slightly
  • Fast, snappy, and quiet autofocus system
  • High-quality, durable build with basic weather sealing
  • Smooth and pleasing bokeh rendering
  • Exceptional price-to-performance ratio
  • Strong resistance to lens flare and ghosting

What we don't like about Sigma 16mm F 1 4 DC DN C

  • Relatively large, heavy, and bulky for an APS-C prime lens
  • Lacks built-in optical image stabilization
  • Noticeable chromatic aberration (color fringing) when shooting wide open at f/1.4
  • Slight softness in the extreme corners of the frame at wider apertures
  • Visible minor barrel distortion before digital correction
  • Absence of physical controls on the lens body like an aperture ring or AF/MF switch

Verdict

The Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary is a high-speed, wide-angle prime lens designed for APS-C and Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, offering a full-frame equivalent focal length of approximately 24mm (APS-C) or 32mm (MFT). Its optical construction features 16 elements in 13 groups, including three FLD, two SLD, and two aspherical elements, alongside a 9-blade rounded diaphragm for smooth bokeh. Main pros include its ultra-fast f/1.4 maximum aperture for exceptional low-light performance, a silent stepping motor for fast autofocus in both stills and video, and a robust, dust- and splash-resistant build quality. However, some cons include its relatively large and heavy footprint (405g) compared to other APS-C primes, the lack of built-in optical image stabilisation, and noticeable barrel distortion and longitudinal chromatic aberration when shooting wide open.
