What we like about Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm F1 8

  • Extremely fast, accurate, and near-silent autofocus performance
  • Premium all-metal build quality in a very compact and lightweight design
  • Intuitive 'snapshot' manual focus clutch mechanism with hard stops
  • Excellent center sharpness even when shooting wide open at f/1.8
  • Pleasing bokeh rendering, particularly for a wide-angle lens at close distances
  • Versatile 34mm (equivalent) focal length ideal for street and travel photography

What we don't like about Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm F1 8

  • Noticeable softening of sharpness at the edges and corners of the frame
  • High native distortion and chromatic aberration in uncorrected RAW files
  • Lens hood is not included and must be purchased separately at a high cost
  • Lack of weather sealing on the standard version
  • Relatively expensive compared to some rival Micro Four Thirds prime lenses

Verdict

The Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm f/1.8 is a compact, all-metal wide-angle prime lens for Micro Four Thirds systems, providing a versatile 34mm full-frame equivalent focal length ideal for street and travel photography. Its optical design consists of 9 elements in 6 groups, including three aspherical and one high-refractive element to combat aberrations, while a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture and 7-blade circular diaphragm ensure strong low-light performance and smooth bokeh. Key features include a silent, high-speed MSC (Movie & Stills Compatible) autofocus motor and a 'Snapshot' manual focus clutch that reveals a distance and depth-of-field scale when pulled back. Main pros are its premium build quality, pocketable 120g weight, and rapid autofocus speed. Notable cons include the lack of weather sealing, significant chromatic aberration in high-contrast scenes, and a tendency for corner sharpness to lag behind the center unless stopped down.
