Third-party reviews

Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Nikon NIKKOR Z DX MC 35mm F 1 7

  • Fast f/1.7 aperture provides excellent low-light performance and shallow depth of field
  • Exceptional sharpness comparable to high-end S-Line lenses
  • Compact and lightweight design (approx. 7 oz) makes it highly portable
  • Internal focusing mechanism prevents the lens barrel from extending
  • Versatile 52.5mm equivalent focal length suitable for everyday photography and portraits

What we don't like about Nikon NIKKOR Z DX MC 35mm F 1 7

  • Not a true 1:1 macro lens; offers 0.67x maximum magnification
  • Lack of optical Vibration Reduction (VR), which can be difficult for handheld macro on non-IBIS DX bodies
  • Extremely short working distance for macro shots often causes the lens to cast shadows on subjects
  • No physical switches for focus modes (A/M) on the lens barrel

Verdict

The Nikon NIKKOR Z DX MC 35mm f/1.7 is a compact, 220g macro lens designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras, offering a 52.5mm full-frame equivalent focal length. Key specifications include a fast f/1.7 maximum aperture, a minimum focusing distance of 16 cm, a 0.67x maximum reproduction ratio, a 9-blade diaphragm, and an 8-element optical design in 7 groups with an internal focus mechanism powered by a silent STM motor. Main pros include outstanding central sharpness, a bright aperture for low-light shooting, minimized focus breathing for video, a customizable control ring, and weather-sealed construction. However, notable cons include the lack of built-in image stabilization (VR), heavy vignetting and coma at f/1.7, a maximum magnification that falls short of true 1:1 macro, and a lens hood that must be purchased separately.
