What we like about Samyang VDSLR 50mm T1 5 MK2

  • Excellent value for money, offering professional cine features at a budget-friendly price point.
  • Integrated 0.8 MOD gears for focus and aperture, compatible with standard follow-focus systems.
  • De-clicked aperture ring allows for smooth, silent exposure transitions during filming.
  • Long focus throw (approx. 130°-150°) and hard stops provide precise manual focusing control.
  • MK2 version includes weather-sealing at the mount for better protection in outdoor environments.
  • Consistent color rendering and unified gear placement across the MK2 lineup for easier lens swaps.
  • Produces smooth, circular bokeh thanks to the updated 9-blade iris.
  • Dual-side focus and aperture scales for better visibility from either side of the camera.

What we don't like about Samyang VDSLR 50mm T1 5 MK2

  • Noticeable softness and loss of contrast when shooting wide open at T1.5.
  • Significant chromatic aberration (color fringing) in high-contrast areas at wider apertures.
  • Noticeable focus breathing, which may be distracting during significant focus pulls.
  • Mostly plastic exterior construction can feel less durable than high-end all-metal cine lenses.
  • Optimum sharpness generally requires stopping down to at least T2.8 or T4.
  • Manual-only operation with no electronic contacts for EXIF data or autofocus.

Verdict

The Samyang VDSLR 50mm T1.5 MK2 is a full-frame manual cine prime featuring a fast T1.5 aperture and an optical construction of 9 elements in 6 groups, including hybrid aspherical elements to minimize aberration. Key characteristics include a 9-blade rounded iris for smooth bokeh and 18-ray starbursts, a 77mm filter thread, and a weather-sealed mount for protection in varied environments. Its main pros are the unified 0.8 MOD gear placements and dual-side focus/aperture scales that streamline professional rig workflows, alongside a long 150-degree focus throw for precise manual pulls. However, the lens does exhibit some focus breathing and noticeable color fringing/chromatic aberration when shooting wide open.
