Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Nikon NIKKOR Z 24 50mm F 4 6 3

  • Extremely compact, slim, and retractable design
  • Lightweight build at only 195 grams
  • Fast, highly accurate, and near-silent autofocus system
  • Excellent value for money, especially when purchased as a kit lens
  • Surprisingly good flare resistance and contrast
  • Reliable dust and splash weather sealing for its class
  • Good center sharpness, especially when stopped down slightly

What we don't like about Nikon NIKKOR Z 24 50mm F 4 6 3

  • Very narrow and slow variable maximum aperture of f/4 to f/6.3
  • Very limited 2.1x zoom range that feels restrictive
  • Plastic lens mount that is prone to scratching and wear over time
  • Telescoping barrel design can trap sand and grit during operation
  • Noticeable drop in sharpness toward the extreme corners
  • Lacks basic physical controls like a dedicated AF/MF switch
  • Does not include a lens hood or carrying pouch in the box
  • Weak bokeh performance due to the small maximum aperture

Verdict

The Nikon Nikkor Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 is an ultra-compact, full-frame standard zoom lens designed for the Z-mount system, distinguished as the shortest and lightest in its class at just 195g and 51mm when retracted. Its optical design features 11 elements in 10 groups, including two ED and three aspherical elements to maintain edge-to-edge clarity across its 2x zoom range, alongside a fast, near-silent stepping motor (STM) for autofocus. Main pros include its extreme portability, dust and drip resistance, and a customizable control ring for intuitive adjustments of aperture or exposure. However, its primary cons are a relatively limited focal range, a narrow variable maximum aperture of f/4-6.3 that limits low-light performance and bokeh, and a plastic lens mount that may lack long-term durability compared to metal alternatives.
