What we like about Viltrox AF 33mm F 1 4

  • Excellent value for money and highly affordable compared to first-party alternatives
  • Solid all-metal build quality including a metal lens hood
  • Fast and silent autofocus performance using an STM stepping motor
  • Compact and lightweight design making it a great walk-around lens
  • Bright f/1.4 aperture provides excellent low-light performance and shallow depth of field
  • Pleasing bokeh quality with 9 rounded aperture blades
  • Includes a click-less aperture ring, which is beneficial for video work
  • Supports firmware updates via a built-in USB port

What we don't like about Viltrox AF 33mm F 1 4

  • Softness in image corners, especially when shooting wide open at f/1.4
  • Noticeable chromatic aberration (purple/green fringing) in high-contrast scenes
  • Lacks weather sealing
  • No built-in lens correction profiles in-camera for JPEGs
  • Aperture ring is click-less (stepless), which some photographers find less tactile for stills
  • Moderate levels of lens flare and barrel/pincushion distortion in some scenarios
  • Auto-exposure 'chattering' issues reported in early firmware versions
  • Minimum focus distance of 0.4m is not ideal for macro or close-up photography

Verdict

The Viltrox AF 33mm f/1.4 is a compact, large-aperture prime lens designed for APS-C mirrorless systems, featuring an optical construction of 10 elements in 9 groups (including 1 ED and 1 HR element) and a 9-blade rounded diaphragm. It offers a 50mm full-frame equivalent focal length, a fast f/1.4 to f/16 aperture range, and a quiet STM stepping motor for autofocus with a minimum focus distance of 0.4m. Weighing approximately 270g with a 52mm filter thread and an all-metal build, its main pros include excellent low-light performance, smooth bokeh, an integrated manual aperture ring, and a micro-USB port for firmware updates. However, it lacks weather sealing and built-in image stabilization, and it can exhibit noticeable chromatic aberration and lens breathing at wider apertures.
