What we like about Nikon AF Fisheye NIKKOR 16mm F 2 8D

  • Extremely compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry as an 'afterthought' lens.
  • Excellent center sharpness and high contrast even when shooting wide open at f/2.8.
  • Strong resistance to flare and ghosting, allowing for creative shots with the sun in the frame.
  • Includes a Close-Range Correction (CRC) system that maintains image quality at its 0.8-ft minimum focus distance.
  • Sturdy, high-quality Japanese construction that holds up well over decades of use.

What we don't like about Nikon AF Fisheye NIKKOR 16mm F 2 8D

  • Noticeable loss of sharpness and 'fuzziness' in the corners at wide apertures like f/2.8.
  • Uses an older 'screwdriver' autofocus motor, which is loud and will not autofocus on entry-level Nikon DSLRs (D3000/D5000 series) or Z-series cameras via adapter.
  • Prone to chromatic aberration (CA) in high-contrast edge areas.
  • Requires a rear-mounted filter to be installed at all times to achieve infinity focus.
  • The front element is highly exposed and prone to smudges; the included slip-on plastic cap is often criticized for being insecure.

Verdict

The Nikon AF Fisheye-Nikkor 16mm f/2.8D is a compact, full-frame (FX) prime lens featuring an expansive 180° diagonal angle of view and an 8-element optical design in 5 groups. Key specifications include a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture, a 7-blade diaphragm, and a minimum focus distance of 0.25m supported by a Close-Range Correction (CRC) system for enhanced close-up performance. Its main pros include sharp central performance, robust metal build quality, and specialized Super Integrated Coating (SIC) to minimize flare and ghosting. However, it lacks a built-in autofocus motor (requiring a camera with a physical screw-drive), has no weather sealing, and suffers from visible chromatic aberration and softer corners when used at wide apertures.
