Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Canon EF 800mm F 5 6L IS USM

  • Superb optical quality and sharpness even wide open at f/5.6
  • Effective 4-stop image stabilization system
  • Excellent build quality with full weather sealing
  • Fast and accurate autofocus performance for wildlife and sports
  • Lighter than the older EF 600mm f/4L IS USM lens
  • Produces smooth, high-quality background blur (bokeh)

What we don't like about Canon EF 800mm F 5 6L IS USM

  • Extremely high initial purchase price
  • Large and heavy, making prolonged handheld shooting difficult for most
  • Relatively long minimum focusing distance of 6 metres
  • Noticeable vignetting when shot wide open at f/5.6
  • Low maximum magnification ratio (0.14x) limits close-up utility
  • Size requires specialized, large carrying cases

Verdict

The Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM is a premier super-telephoto prime lens featuring 18 elements in 14 groups, including fluorite, UD, and Super-UD glass to ensure exceptional sharpness and minimal chromatic aberration. Built with a robust, weather-sealed magnesium alloy barrel, it weighs approximately 4.5kg and includes a ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) for fast, silent autofocus alongside a 4-stop optical Image Stabilizer. Main pros include its incredible reach for wildlife and sports, class-leading optical performance even wide open, and professional-grade durability. However, notable cons include its significant weight and bulk making a tripod almost mandatory, a long minimum focusing distance of 6.0m, and a very high price point.
