Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Canon EF 70 200mm F 4L IS USM

  • Exceptional image sharpness across the entire zoom range, even wide open at f/4
  • Highly effective 4-stop optical image stabilization system that prevents camera shake
  • Lightweight and compact design that is much easier to carry than f/2.8 alternatives
  • Robust L-series build quality featuring dust and moisture weather sealing
  • Fast, accurate, and nearly silent autofocus tracking via the Ring USM motor
  • Beautiful and smooth background bokeh rendering
  • Internal focusing and zooming mechanisms prevent the lens barrel from expanding

What we don't like about Canon EF 70 200mm F 4L IS USM

  • Maximum f/4 aperture can limit performance in challenging low-light conditions compared to f/2.8 lenses
  • Noticeable vignetting (dark corners) when shooting full-frame at f/4, especially past 135mm
  • Slight drop-off in sharpness when shooting right at the minimum focusing distance
  • The distinctive large white lens barrel makes it highly conspicuous and bad for stealth shooting
  • Mild pincushion distortion at the 200mm focal length
  • The 67mm filter thread size does not share common filters with standard 77mm L-series lenses
  • Significantly more expensive than the non-stabilized version

Verdict

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is a professional-grade L-series telephoto zoom lens featuring a constant f/4 aperture throughout its 70-200mm focal range and a 4-stop optical image stabilizer. Weighing approximately 760g with a 67mm filter thread, it incorporates high-end optics including one fluorite and two UD elements, an 8-blade circular aperture, and a ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) for fast, near-silent autofocus. Key advantages include its compact, weather-sealed construction, internal zooming and focusing that maintain a constant lens length, and exceptional edge-to-edge sharpness. However, potential drawbacks include a maximum aperture of f/4 which may limit performance in very low light compared to f/2.8 alternatives, a lack of an included tripod collar, and some visible vignetting or mild distortion at the focal extremes when used on full-frame cameras.
