What we like about SJCAM SJ8 Plus

  • High-quality, solid build with a premium rubberized plastic finish
  • Large and highly responsive 2.33-inch IPS rear touchscreen with intuitive menu navigation
  • Convenient 0.96-inch front OLED display that is highly useful for vlogging
  • Sharp and vibrant native 4K video quality at 30fps under optimal daylight conditions
  • Good, loud audio quality through the dual-microphone system compared to similar models
  • Long-lasting, replaceable 1200mAh battery providing up to 100-120 minutes of recording time
  • Decent array of shooting modes including time-lapse, slow record, and burst options
  • Strong value for money as a budget-friendly action camera package

What we don't like about SJCAM SJ8 Plus

  • Unreliable electronic gyro image stabilization that causes jitters and frame-skipping in 4K resolution
  • Noticeable degradation in video quality, detail loss, and exposure issues during low-light shooting
  • Lacks native 4K recording at 60fps, which is available on the slightly higher-priced Pro model
  • Unusual color processing that can result in overly warm tones or overemphasized reds and pinks
  • Requires an external case to achieve waterproofing capabilities
  • Suffered from early discontinuation of firmware updates, leaving unresolved software performance bugs
  • Slight lag and latency when streaming or previewing footage via the mobile Wi-Fi application connection

Verdict

The SJCAM SJ8 Plus is a mid-range action camera featuring a Sony IMX117 sensor and a Novatek 96683 chipset, capable of recording native 4K video at 30fps and capturing 12MP photos. Its dual-screen design includes a primary 2.33-inch IPS touchscreen on the back for intuitive navigation and a front-facing 0.96-inch OLED display for quick status checks. Main advantages include its robust rubberized plastic build, 170° wide-angle field of view with an f/2.8 aperture, dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5GHz), and a substantial 1200mAh battery that supports approximately 100 minutes of 4K recording. However, notable drawbacks include its lack of native waterproofing without an external case, unreliable electronic image stabilization (EIS) at 4K resolution, and occasional issues with file corruption when reaching the 4GB file size limit.
