What we like about SJCAM SJ5000X Elite

  • Excellent value for money compared to expensive competitors
  • Stunning video quality in 1080p mode at 60fps
  • Effective built-in Gyro image stabilization
  • Wide array of included accessories and mounts compatible with GoPro
  • Large and bright 2-inch rear LCD screen
  • True 12MP Sony sensor handles colors naturally
  • Intuitive and easy-to-navigate menu settings
  • Useful alternative features like time-lapse, motion detection, and dash cam mode

What we don't like about SJCAM SJ5000X Elite

  • Not native 4K resolution as it uses interpolated/upscaled 2K
  • Subpar audio capture with a muffled and low-volume microphone
  • Flimsy, fragile, and hard-to-operate battery cover door
  • Stiff and difficult-to-press buttons on the waterproof case
  • Poor video and photo details in low-light or nighttime conditions
  • Image processing artifacts like blocky skies when the CPU struggles
  • Short battery life lasting only about 45 minutes when recording in high resolutions

Verdict

The SJCAM SJ5000x Elite is a budget-friendly action camera equipped with a 12.4-megapixel Sony IMX078 sensor, a Novatek NTK96660 processor, and a 2-inch rear LCD screen. Its primary characteristics include recording video at 4K at 24 fps, 2K at 30 fps, and 1080p at 60 fps, combined with a built-in 3-axis gyro stabilization system and an adjustable wide-angle lens spanning 70 to 170 degrees. Key advantages include its highly effective anti-shake performance, integrated Wi-Fi connectivity for app control, a versatile suite of features like time-lapse and motion detection, and a rich bundle of included accessories such as a 30-meter waterproof housing. However, the camera suffers from a few notable drawbacks, such as its 4K resolution being upscaled/interpolated from 2K rather than native, mediocre low-light video performance that appears dark and grainy, disappointing internal audio capture quality, and a limited 900 mAh battery capacity yielding under an hour of higher-resolution recording time.
