Ricoh THETA Z1 Review | 96 Data compared

The Ricoh Theta Z1 stands out as a top-tier, candy-bar-shaped 360 camera tailored specifically for professional photographers who prioritize image quality over video. It is the first all-in-one 360 camera to pack dual 1.0-inch back-illuminated CMOS sensors, enabling it to capture immense light and detail, even in challenging low-light and indoor environments. Priced at $999.50, its standout feature is the ability to shoot 23MP DNG RAW images, which can be seamlessly edited and stitched using a custom Adobe Lightroom plugin to eliminate visible seam lines and achieve DSLR-like quality. Furthermore, it introduces a unique variable aperture system and reliable software integration through the Theta App for full manual control. The primary advantages (pros) of the Z1 include its exceptional image quality, stellar low-light performance, auto HDR rendering, and an easy editing workflow. However, it comes with notable downsides (cons) that limit its flexibility, most notably its expensive price tag, lack of expandable storage—confining users to 19GB of internal memory—and a non-removable battery. Additionally, while those large lenses enhance 4K video dynamic range, the video features are compromised by minimal software...

The Ricoh Theta Z1 is a pocket-sized 360-degree camera that captures 23-megapixel high-resolution still photos and videos in both RAW and JPEG formats. It features a large one-inch sensor engineered for superior low-light photography, making it ideal for capturing demanding environments like night skies or the Northern Lights. Designed for both enthusiasts and everyday travelers, the device successfully captures an entire visible environment in a single click, eliminating the need to stitch together manual smartphone panoramas. A major pro of this camera is its ease of use; unlike competing models, users do not need to rely on a smartphone companion app to operate or shoot images. It delivers highly vivid colors and immersive imagery that makes viewers feel transported to the location. However, the primary con of the Ricoh Theta Z1 is its steep price tag of $1,000, making it a substantial investment that requires a genuine interest in photography to justify.

The Ricoh Theta Z1 is a premium 360-degree camera designed to offer high-end image quality, though its premium price tag of approximately $999 makes it a niche choice for most everyday consumers. On the positive side, the camera excels at low-light photography and captures rich, highly saturated 23 MP still images and 4K video at 30 fps, largely due to its dual 1-inch backside-illuminated CMOS sensors. Its magnesium body provides a solid, sturdy feel, and its pocketable, rectangular design means it can be easily operated without a selfie stick. Additionally, it offers good audio wind-noise reduction, decent image stabilization, and runs on an Android-based operating system that allows for third-party plug-ins to expand its functional capabilities. However, the reviewer highlights several notable drawbacks that hold the camera back. The Theta Z1 lacks expandable storage, forcing users to manage a fixed 19GB of usable, nonremovable memory. The workflow is also cumbersome; files must be fully transferred to a smartphone before they can even be viewed, and comprehensive video editing requires downloading a separate secondary app (Theta+). Furthermore, the camera suffers from...

The Ricoh Theta Z1 is highly reviewed as an industry-standard, all-in-one 360 camera particularly optimized for capturing high-quality professional virtual tours. Its primary pros center around its advanced hardware and superior image quality, driven by unique dual 1.0-inch back-illuminated CMOS sensors that deliver exceptional dynamic range, sharpness, and low-light performance. Photographers benefit greatly from its ability to shoot 23MP (7K) photos in DNG RAW mode, allowing extensive color correction and exposure recovery via a dedicated Adobe Lightroom plugin. Additionally, its functionality is expandable through downloadable tools like the highly recommended Dual Fish-Eye Plugin, which optimizes multi-exposure bracketed shooting for seamless HDR stitching. YouTube ·The 360 Despite its photography strengths, the camera has notable cons, specifically regarding video performance, internal hardware limitations, and physical design. It is poorly suited for videography because its 360 video resolution is capped at 4K, falling short of competitor standards that commonly offer 5K or higher, while updates to its built-in image stabilization yield little noticeable improvement. On the hardware front, users are restricted by a short battery life and a non-expandable 19GB of internal storage—though...

Despite its photography strengths, the camera has notable limitations that make it less suitable for dedicated videographers. The 4K video resolution is considered mediocre and uncompetitive with other 5.7K cameras from the same era, suffering from low detail and heavy contrast outside of low-light conditions. The physical design omits expandable storage and a removable battery, restricting users to the internal 19GB memory and shorter shooting times. Additionally, the larger physical distance between the lenses introduces greater parallax errors, meaning reliable automatic stitching fails for objects closer than three feet unless users manually recalibrate using Raw formatting. Users have also reported frustrating technical quirks, including weak Wi-Fi connectivity and accurate but occasionally redundant GPS data stacking during indoor multi-panoramic shoots.

The Ricoh Theta Z1 stands out as an exceptional, high-quality "DSLR" of the single-shot 360 camera market, built to capture fully spherical images at a resolution of 6720 x 3360 in JPEG or DNG raw format. Its core advantage lies in its dual 1.0-inch type image sensors, which are 4.3 times larger than standard consumer 360 camera sensors, resulting in vastly superior low-light performance, deeper bit depth, and wider dynamic range. Reviewers found that using the camera's built-in HDR mode eliminates the need for technical adjustments, allowing real estate agents and photographers to quickly shoot stunning, detailed virtual tours in less than 30 minutes with minimal effort. Despite its premium performance, the device comes with distinct trade-offs in storage, power, and pricing. On the downside, the camera features a restricted internal memory of approximately 19GB—capable of holding about 350 RAW+ photos or 2400 JPEGs—and lacks expandable storage options. Additionally, battery life is limited to around 300 photos per charge, which may restrict prolonged independent shooting sessions. Finally, with a hefty retail price tag of US$999, it is explicitly targeted at...

The Ricoh Theta Z1 is a semi-professional 360-degree camera featuring a unique 1-inch sensor, 23MP 7K photo capture, and specialized optics designed to reduce lens flare. Tested by blogger Warren for on-bike motorcycle photography, the camera's primary advantage is its dual 180-degree lenses, which allow riders to capture an entire scene blindly and frame the perfect shot later using Ricoh's software. It is highly photographer-friendly because it remembers the last used custom settings and boots directly into photo mode rather than defaulting to video like standard action cameras. Furthermore, it runs on Android, features custom user modes, supports raw and HDR DNG files, and handles bright skies much better than older models. Despite these premium hardware specs, the reviewer finds the final image quality difficult to justify due to severe software limitations. The camera's major flaws include consistently soft photos—even when standing still on a selfie stick—and a visible, hard join line where the two lenses stitch images together. The Z1's wide-angle perspective also pushes scenery far into the distance, resulting in images that lack the crisp sharpness found in...

The TechCrunch review praises the Ricoh Theta Z1 as the best 360-degree camera for still photography under $1,000, catering specifically to enthusiasts and professionals. The camera's main standout feature is its dual 1-inch sensors, which deliver unmatched, color-accurate, and incredibly sharp 6702×3360 resolution images that perform remarkably well in low-light and bright outdoor settings. Additional pros include a premium, durable magnesium alloy body, seamless automated software stitching, adjustable aperture settings (f/2.1, f/3.5, and f/5.6), and RAW (DNG) format capture that integrates perfectly with Adobe Lightroom for flexible post-editing. Conversely, the review highlights notable limitations, particularly regarding video performance and hardware constraints. On the con side, its 4K video recording is underwhelming, plagued by weak built-in image stabilization and restrictive recording limits capped at 5 minutes per session for 4K footage. Physical drawbacks include a total reliance on under 20GB of non-expandable internal storage without a micro SD slot, and an expensive $999.95 premium price tag that doubles the cost of its closest competitors.

The Ricoh Theta Z1 represents a major advancement for 360-degree cameras, featuring dual 1-inch sensors that deliver exceptional photo quality, high dynamic range, and superior low-light performance up to ISO 6400. Key advantages include unstitched RAW DNG support for professional workflows, variable aperture (f/2.1–f/5.6), and a durable, compact design with a metallic finish. 360 Conversely, the Z1's video performance is considered average, characterized by compressed 4K output that lacks the detail of competitors. Significant limitations include non-expandable internal storage (19 GB), a non-removable battery, and the absence of an external microphone input.
