What we like about Intel Core i5 3470S

  • Excellent power efficiency with a 65W TDP compared to the standard 77W variant
  • Good performance for general office tasks, web browsing, and 1080p video streaming
  • Backward compatibility with Sandy Bridge motherboards (LGA 1155 socket)
  • Support for hardware virtualization (VT-x and VT-d), making it suitable for basic virtual machine use
  • Offers a significant performance boost over older Core i3 or Sandy Bridge counterparts

What we don't like about Intel Core i5 3470S

  • Considered a 'dead platform' with limited upgrade paths beyond 3rd Gen Ivy Bridge
  • The integrated HD Graphics 2500 is insufficient for modern or intensive gaming
  • Lacks Hyper-Threading, limiting its multitasking capabilities compared to i7 models
  • The multiplier is locked, which severely restricts overclocking potential
  • Vulnerable to older hardware security exploits such as Spectre and Meltdown
  • Officially lacks support for Windows 11, limiting its long-term software viability

Verdict

The Intel Core i5-3470S is a quad-core, 3rd generation Ivy Bridge desktop processor featuring 4 threads, a 2.9 GHz base frequency, and a 3.6 GHz max turbo boost. Built on a 22nm lithography process with a 65W TDP, it includes 6MB of Intel Smart Cache, supports up to 32GB of dual-channel DDR3-1333/1600 memory, and integrates Intel HD Graphics 2500. Its main pros include lower power consumption compared to the standard i5-3470 (65W vs. 77W) and reliable performance for daily office tasks, web browsing, and smooth 1080p video playback. However, its notable cons include its outdated LGA 1155 socket which severely limits future upgrade paths, the lack of Hyper-Threading technology, and difficulty handling modern 4K 60fps video or high-end AAA gaming titles.
