What we like about SPC Gear SM900

  • Excellent value for money as a complete starter kit (includes arm, shock mount, and pop filter).
  • Solid metal build quality for both the microphone and the mesh protection.
  • Warm sound signature with plenty of bass and crisp high-end recording.
  • Effective background noise reduction due to the cardioid polar pattern.
  • Simple 'Plug & Play' functionality requiring no additional software or drivers.
  • Exceptionally long 2.9-meter USB cable provides great placement flexibility.

What we don't like about SPC Gear SM900

  • Lack of physical controls on the device (no mute button or hardware gain dial).
  • The included adjustable arm can be prone to 'bouncing' or spring-like motion after repositioning.
  • Limited versatility with only a single polar pattern (cardioid), making it unsuitable for multi-person recordings.
  • No built-in headphone jack for zero-latency direct monitoring.
  • Bulky physical footprint when fully assembled with the included stand and arm.

Verdict

The SPC Gear SM900 is a professional USB streaming microphone featuring a cardioid polar pattern, a 16-bit/48kHz sampling rate, and an impressive frequency response range of 18 Hz to 21,000 Hz. Built with a high-end Cmedia chipset and a durable metal housing, it excels at providing clear, warm recordings with excellent background noise insulation and a high sound pressure level (SPL) of 135 dB. Its main pros include a comprehensive 'plug and play' setup that bundles an adjustable mounting arm, shock mount, and pop filter, ensuring high versatility for streamers and vloggers right out of the box. However, notable cons include the lack of a dedicated mute button or on-device gain control, no 3.5mm headphone jack for direct monitoring, and a spring-loaded arm that can be prone to slight bouncing when moved.
