Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Viltrox AF 56mm F 1 7

  • Exceptional value for money, often described as 'punching above its weight'
  • Highly compact and lightweight design (approx. 170g), making it very portable
  • Excellent sharpness, especially in the center, and performs well even on high-resolution 40MP sensors
  • Smooth and pleasing bokeh, ideal for portrait photography
  • Sturdy build quality with a metal mount despite its budget price
  • Minimal focus breathing and low chromatic aberration

What we don't like about Viltrox AF 56mm F 1 7

  • Lack of physical controls such as an aperture ring or AF/MF switches
  • No weather sealing, making it less suitable for harsh environments
  • Autofocus can be slow or hesitant, particularly at close distances or in low light
  • Relatively long minimum focusing distance (0.55m), limiting close-up use
  • Noticeable vignetting and loss of contrast/flaring when shooting against strong backlight
  • No built-in optical image stabilization (OIS)

Verdict

The Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.7 is a compact, budget-friendly prime lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras (Sony E, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z), providing an 85mm full-frame equivalent focal length ideal for portraits. It features an optical design of 11 elements in 9 groups—including 4 extra-low dispersion (ED) and 3 high-refractive elements—along with a 9-blade aperture for smooth bokeh and a quiet STM motor for fast autofocus. Weighing approximately 171g with a 52mm filter thread and a minimum focus distance of 0.55m, its main pros include outstanding center sharpness from f/1.7, a lightweight portable build, and a built-in USB-C port for easy firmware updates. However, its main cons are the lack of a physical aperture ring and weather sealing, as well as noticeable vignetting and flare sensitivity when shooting wide open without the lens hood.
