What we like about Viltrox AF 40mm F 2 5

  • Excellent value for money and extremely affordable
  • Highly compact and lightweight design, weighing only 167g-180g
  • Very sharp in the center, even when shooting wide open at f/2.5
  • Quiet, fast, and accurate autofocus performance for both stills and video
  • Includes a metal lens mount and a USB-C port for easy firmware updates
  • Minimal focus breathing, making it suitable for videography
  • Comes with a lens hood and storage pouch included in the box

What we don't like about Viltrox AF 40mm F 2 5

  • Lacks physical controls such as an aperture ring or AF/MF switch
  • No comprehensive weather sealing, though the front element has a protective coating
  • Noticeable chromatic aberration and purple fringing in high-contrast scenes
  • Edge and corner sharpness are softer compared to the center when wide open
  • Bokeh can appear somewhat 'busy' or clinical in certain lighting situations
  • Noticeable pincushion distortion that requires post-processing correction
  • Disappointing minimum focusing distance of 0.34m (0.14x magnification)

Verdict

The Viltrox AF 40mm f/2.5 is an ultra-compact and lightweight full-frame prime lens (weighing approximately 167g–180g) designed for Nikon Z and Sony E mounts, featuring an optical construction of 10 elements in 6 groups, including one ED, three HR, and one aspherical element. It offers a natural 57.8° field of view and a 7-blade aperture diaphragm (f/2.5 to f/16), driven by a quiet STM stepping motor that supports eye-tracking autofocus and maintains a minimum focus distance of 34cm. Its main pros include exceptional center sharpness even wide open, a highly portable 'pancake-style' form factor, and a built-in USB-C port for firmware updates, all at a very budget-friendly price point. However, main cons include the lack of weather sealing, the absence of physical AF/MF or aperture control rings on the barrel, and a bokeh quality that can appear 'busy' or nervous in certain high-contrast backgrounds.
