Third-party reviews

Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Sony FE 50mm F1 8

  • Exceptional value and affordability as Sony's most budget-friendly full-frame prime lens
  • Extremely lightweight and compact, making it highly portable for travel and daily use
  • Excellent image quality when stopped down, with high center sharpness even at f/1.8
  • Beautiful bokeh and subject separation for portrait photography
  • Reliable low-light performance due to the wide f/1.8 aperture
  • Firmware updates (v03) significantly improved earlier autofocus speed and accuracy issues

What we don't like about Sony FE 50mm F1 8

  • Autofocus motor can be slow and noisy, which may be distracting during video recording or candid shots
  • Soft image corners and noticeable vignetting when shooting wide open at f/1.8
  • Plastic construction feels less premium and lacks professional-grade weather sealing
  • Autofocus occasionally struggles or 'hunts' in low-light or backlit situations
  • Visible chromatic aberration in high-contrast or bright-light scenes

Verdict

The Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 is a compact, lightweight full-frame prime lens weighing approximately 186g, featuring a 7-blade circular aperture and a double-gauss optical design with one aspherical element to minimise aberrations. Main characteristics include its versatile 'normal' 50mm focal length, a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture for low-light performance, and a minimum focus distance of 0.45m. Its primary pros are its exceptional value, portability, and center sharpness that produces pleasing background bokeh for portraits. However, cons include a relatively slow and noisy DC motor autofocus system that may struggle in low light, lack of weather sealing, and noticeable corner softness and vignetting when shooting wide open.
