What we like about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm F 1 4D

  • Excellent low-light performance due to the bright f/1.4 maximum aperture.
  • Extremely compact and lightweight design makes it highly portable.
  • Outstanding sharpness and image quality when stopped down to f/2.8 or smaller.
  • Affordable price point for a fast f/1.4 prime lens.
  • Physical aperture ring provides excellent backward compatibility with older manual film bodies.
  • Delivers very smooth, pleasant bokeh and great subject separation for portrait photography.
  • Autofocus is brisk, fast, and highly accurate on bodies with built-in focus motors.
  • Durable physical build featuring a solid metal mount.

What we don't like about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm F 1 4D

  • Lacks an internal autofocus motor, meaning it will only manual focus on entry-level Nikon DSLRs like the D3000/D5000 series or via FTZ mirrorless adapters.
  • Optically soft, hazy, or exhibits 'bloom' and reduced contrast when shot wide open at f/1.4.
  • Noticeable corner shading (vignetting) and fall-off when used wide open on full-frame sensors.
  • Noticeable chromatic aberrations and purple fringing around highlights at wide apertures.
  • Mechanical screw-driven autofocus mechanism makes it noisier compared to modern AF-S or Z silent motors.
  • Straight 7-blade diaphragm can create angular, heptagonal out-of-focus highlights instead of round bokeh circles.
  • The generic plastic push-on rear cap included with the lens is loosely fitted and prone to falling off easily.

Verdict

The Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D is a compact standard prime lens featuring an optical design of 7 elements in 6 groups and a rounded 7-blade diaphragm for natural bokeh. Weighing approximately 230g with a 52mm filter thread, it offers a fast f/1.4 maximum aperture ideal for low-light photography and shallow depth-of-field effects, alongside a manual aperture ring for backwards compatibility with older film bodies. Its main advantages include a lightweight, portable build, excellent color reproduction, and high-contrast image quality when stopped down. However, it lacks an internal autofocus motor, meaning it can only be manually focused on entry-level Nikon DSLRs (D3000/D5000 series), and users often note softer performance wide open at f/1.4 and somewhat noisy mechanical autofocus operation.
