What we like about Sony DT 16 50mm F 2 8 SSM

  • Constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom range
  • Weather-sealed construction for durability in various conditions
  • Fast and nearly silent Super Sonic Wave Motor (SSM) autofocus
  • High central sharpness, especially when stopped down to f/4 or f/5.6
  • Excellent value for money, particularly when purchased as a kit or used
  • Smooth and well-damped zoom and focus rings with a zoom lock switch
  • Internal focusing mechanism ensures the front element does not rotate

What we don't like about Sony DT 16 50mm F 2 8 SSM

  • Noticeable barrel distortion at the 16mm wide end
  • Softness at the edges and corners of the frame, particularly at 50mm
  • Relatively heavy and bulky compared to standard APS-C kit lenses
  • Noticeable chromatic aberration (purple fringing) in high-contrast areas
  • Prone to flare and ghosting when shooting against bright light
  • Vignetting can be significant at the maximum f/2.8 aperture

Verdict

The Sony DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM is a high-performance standard zoom lens designed specifically for APS-C A-mount cameras, offering a versatile 24-75mm equivalent focal range. It features a bright, constant f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout its zoom range, supported by a Super Sonic wave Motor (SSM) for fast, quiet autofocus and a rugged weather-resistant construction with 16 elements in 13 groups, including two aspherical and three ED glass elements. Major pros include its solid build quality, exceptional sharpness at the center when stopped down to f/4, and effective full-time manual focus override. However, notable cons include significant barrel distortion and vignetting at the 16mm wide end, along with softer image quality at the corners and edges when shot wide open at f/2.8.
