What we like about Sigma 90mm F 2 8 DG DN Contemporary

  • Extremely compact and lightweight design, making it ideal for travel and hiking
  • Premium all-metal build quality with a high-quality vintage feel
  • Excellent sharpness across the frame even when wide open at f/2.8
  • Smooth and pleasing bokeh quality suitable for portraiture
  • Short minimum focusing distance of 50cm, allowing for versatile close-up shooting
  • Features a tactile, clicked aperture ring and smooth manual focus ring
  • Effective control of chromatic aberration and flare

What we don't like about Sigma 90mm F 2 8 DG DN Contemporary

  • Noticeable pincushion distortion in RAW files that requires software correction
  • Basic weather sealing limited primarily to a gasket at the mount
  • Autofocus speed is slightly slower and less accurate than native high-end lenses
  • Aperture ring cannot be de-clicked, which is a drawback for video use
  • Visible vignetting in corners when shooting at f/2.8
  • Magnetic lens cap can be difficult to remove when the lens hood is attached

Verdict

The Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary is a premium compact prime lens designed for full-frame mirrorless systems (L-mount and Sony E-mount), featuring an all-metal build and a 9-blade rounded diaphragm for smooth bokeh. Weighing just 295g with a 55mm filter thread, its optical construction includes 11 elements in 10 groups, incorporating five SLD elements and one aspherical element to ensure edge-to-edge sharpness and minimal chromatic aberration. Its main advantages include a tactile manual aperture ring, a close minimum focusing distance of 50cm with 1:5 magnification, and a silent stepping motor for fast autofocus. However, notable drawbacks include visible pincushion distortion and vignetting in RAW files that require software correction, as well as an aperture ring that cannot be de-clicked for video use.
