Third-party reviews

Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Sony FE 50mm F 2 5 G

  • Extremely compact and lightweight design, ideal for travel and everyday carry
  • Premium all-metal build quality with weather sealing for dust and moisture resistance
  • Fast, silent, and accurate dual linear autofocus performance
  • Excellent sharpness across the frame, even when used wide open
  • Features a dedicated aperture ring with a de-click switch for video use
  • Better than average close-up performance with a 0.31m minimum focus distance
  • Includes a programmable focus hold button and AF/MF switch

What we don't like about Sony FE 50mm F 2 5 G

  • Relatively high price point compared to other 50mm primes
  • Limited low-light performance and subject separation due to the f/2.5 maximum aperture
  • Noticeable focus breathing, which may impact video production
  • Some instances of strong color blur or chromatic aberration in high-contrast scenes
  • Cramped controls on the lens barrel can be difficult to operate when wearing gloves
  • Modestly soft image quality in the corners at the widest aperture
  • Proprietary lens hood design prevents standard reversal for compact storage

Verdict

The Sony FE 50mm f/2.5 G is a compact, full-frame prime lens featuring an 11-blade circular aperture, dual linear motors for fast AF, and a high-quality build with an aperture ring and customisable focus hold button. It delivers impressive sharpness via three aspherical elements and an ED glass element, all while maintaining a lightweight 174g profile and a 0.21m minimum focus distance. While its f/2.5 maximum aperture is slower than rival primes and it exhibits noticeable focus breathing, its portability and tactile controls make it an excellent choice for street photography and gimbal use.
