Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Sigma 300mm F2 8 EX APO DG HSM

  • Exceptional sharpness and contrast, especially in the frame center
  • Fast f/2.8 aperture allows for high shutter speeds in low light and shallow depth of field
  • Quick and quiet Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) autofocus system
  • Solid, high-quality build with a metal barrel
  • Rear drop-in filter holder for easy use of polarizers
  • Significantly more affordable than first-party Canon or Nikon 300mm f/2.8 alternatives

What we don't like about Sigma 300mm F2 8 EX APO DG HSM

  • Lacks optical image stabilization, making handheld shooting difficult
  • Considerably heavy (approx. 5 lbs), often requiring a monopod or tripod for extended use
  • Autofocus can hunt in low-light conditions or with very fast-moving subjects
  • Older Sigma 'EX' finish (paint) has a tendency to peel or chip over time
  • Sub-optimal tripod foot and lens cap designs
  • Edge sharpness and astigmatism are not as strong as center performance

Verdict

The Sigma 300mm f/2.8 EX APO DG HSM is a high-performance telephoto prime lens featuring an 11-element in 9-group optical design with two Extraordinary Low Dispersion (ELD) glass elements to minimize chromatic aberration. Key specifications include a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture, a 9-blade rounded diaphragm, a 2.5m minimum focus distance, and a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) for quiet, high-speed internal focusing. Main pros include exceptional sharpness even at wide apertures, a 46mm rear drop-in filter system with an external rotation ring, and a rugged metal build that includes a removable tripod collar. However, notable cons include its substantial weight of 2,400g, a lack of optical image stabilization, and relatively low maximum magnification for macro work.
