What we like about Sigma 10mm F2 8 EX DC HSM Fisheye

  • Excellent build quality often described as 'built like a tank'
  • High sharpness in the center of the frame even at f/2.8
  • Fast, quiet, and precise autofocus due to the Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM)
  • Extremely close minimum focusing distance (approx. 1.8cm from front element)
  • Full 180-degree diagonal field of view on most APS-C sensors
  • Includes a rear gelatin filter holder for creative effects

What we don't like about Sigma 10mm F2 8 EX DC HSM Fisheye

  • High price point for a specialty lens that may not see daily use
  • Noticeable chromatic aberration (fringing) towards the edges of the frame
  • No front filter thread, making it impossible to use protective or circular filters
  • Integrated hood design makes it difficult to stand the lens face-down without a cap
  • Relatively heavy for its compact size (approx. 475g)

Verdict

The Sigma 10mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Fisheye is a high-performance diagonal fisheye lens designed specifically for APS-C sensor DSLRs, featuring a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture and an equisolid angle projection system ideal for artistic and scientific applications. Its optical construction consists of 12 elements in 7 groups, delivering a wide 180-degree field of view (on Nikon/Sony bodies) with a remarkably close minimum focusing distance of 13.5cm and a 1:3.3 magnification ratio. Main advantages include its robust 'EX' series build quality, a quiet and fast Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) with full-time manual focus override, and a Super Multi-Layer Coating that effectively reduces flare and ghosting. However, it is not compatible with full-frame cameras, lacks weather sealing, and some users note visible chromatic aberration at the edges and a somewhat cumbersome front lens cap design.
