Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Samyang 8mm F 2 8 UMC Fisheye

  • Extremely compact and lightweight, making it ideal for mirrorless cameras
  • Excellent sharpness from corner-to-corner
  • Very solid and well-built construction, often with metal mounts
  • Affordable price point compared to native alternatives
  • Fast f/2.8 aperture makes it good for low-light and astrophotography
  • Large depth of field makes manual focusing easy

What we don't like about Samyang 8mm F 2 8 UMC Fisheye

  • 100% manual focus and aperture, with no electronic contacts for EXIF data
  • No way to attach filters due to the built-in hood and protruding glass
  • Some light fall-off (vignetting) at wide-open f/2.8
  • Focus ring can be quite stiff to operate
  • Significant distortion and loss of angle of view when using digital correction software

Verdict

The Samyang 8mm f/2.8 UMC Fisheye II is a compact, manual-focus prime lens designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras, offering a 12mm equivalent focal length and an expansive 180-degree field of view. Its optical construction features 11 elements in 8 groups, including two aspherical and three extra-low dispersion (ED) elements, paired with an Ultra Multi-Coating (UMC) to reduce flare and ghosting. Key advantages include a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture for low-light performance, exceptional sharpness across the frame, and a lightweight, durable build with a built-in petal-shaped lens hood. However, its primary drawbacks are the lack of autofocus and electronic communication with the camera, the characteristic fisheye distortion which may limit versatility, and the inability to attach standard screw-on filters due to the bulbous front element.
