Third-party reviews

Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Samyang MF 85mm F 1 4 RF

  • Excellent value for money compared to native Canon RF alternatives
  • Produces creamy, smooth bokeh with high-quality subject isolation
  • Solid metallic build quality with a weather-sealed gasket
  • Impressive sharpness even at f/1.4, which becomes excellent when stopped down
  • Smooth and well-damped manual focus ring with approx. 160 degrees of rotation
  • Minimal barrel distortion, making it suitable for panoramic stitching

What we don't like about Samyang MF 85mm F 1 4 RF

  • Fully manual lens with no electronic pins for metadata or aperture control from the camera
  • Noticeable longitudinal chromatic aberration (bokeh fringing) when shot wide-open
  • Minimum focusing distance is somewhat long at 1.1 meters compared to competitors
  • Prone to lens flare in certain high-contrast lighting situations
  • Vignetting is visible at f/1.4, though often considered acceptable for portraiture

Verdict

The Samyang MF 85mm f/1.4 RF is a manual-focus portrait prime designed for Canon's full-frame mirrorless system, featuring an optical construction of 9 elements in 7 groups, including one hybrid aspherical element and Ultra Multi-Coating (UMC). Key characteristics include a fast f/1.4 maximum aperture, a 9-blade rounded diaphragm for smooth bokeh, and a 72mm filter thread, all housed in a weather-sealed body weighing approximately 548g. Main pros are its exceptional center sharpness even wide open, premium metal-alloy build quality, and excellent value for money compared to native RF glass. Notable cons include the lack of electronic contacts (no EXIF data or in-camera aperture control), a relatively long minimum focusing distance of 1.1m, and visible chromatic aberration (purple fringing) in high-contrast scenes at wider apertures.
