Samyang AF 75mm F 1 8 FE Review | 54 Data compared

The LensTip review of the Samyang AF 75 mm f/1.8 FE highlights this short-telephoto prime as an exceptionally compact, lightweight, and budget-friendly portrait option for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. Optically complex with 10 elements in 9 groups (including three ED and two high-refraction elements), the lens punches well above its price class by delivering excellent, ultra-sharp image resolution in the center of the frame starting right at f/1.8, outperforming more expensive rivals like the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 when stopped down. LensTip highly commends its smooth, pleasing out-of-focus background bokeh, low distortion, minimal astigmatism, and well-controlled vignetting on APS-C sensors. Additionally, the build features a unique "Custom Switch" that lets the electronic manual focus ring seamlessly control the aperture, and the retail package generously includes a high-quality, sturdy hard storage case. However, the review uncovers several physical and performance drawbacks. While the metal lens mount is solid, the internal barrel walls are not fully blackened, leaving shiny electronic parts exposed behind the rear element. The autofocus system (STM) operates almost silently and accurately in the studio, but it is noticeably...

The Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 FE delivers outstanding central sharpness from f/1.8 through f/5.6, complemented by excellent edge sharpness up to f/11, low chromatic aberration, and smooth bokeh. This compact and lightweight lens, which earned an Editor's Choice award, provides exceptional performance, featuring quiet, efficient autofocus and minimal, well-corrected distortion. While the lens offers remarkable, near-flawless image quality, the primary disadvantage noted is the complete lack of weather sealing, making it vulnerable in harsh conditions. Despite this, it remains an excellent value proposition for portraiture, offering a compelling blend of portability and optical precision for Sony FE users.

The Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 for Sony E-mount is a highly capable portrait prime lens praised for its extremely lightweight, compact design ("Tiny series") and its affordable price point of approximately €419. When tested on a Sony A7III, it functions as an excellent daily compact kit that makes carrying a camera effortless. Optically, the lens delivers impressive center sharpness at f/1.8 and becomes completely razor-sharp across the frame by f/2.8. It produces a soft, pleasant bokeh that beautifully isolates subjects in fashion, portrait, and detail photography. Additionally, its autofocus performance is fast and accurate, offering speed comparable to the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens. Despite its strong performance, the lens has a few specific drawbacks. Optical compromises at f/1.8 include reduced sharpness and noticeable color deviation in the corners, though these issues mostly disappear by f/2.8. The physically built-in custom mode switch, which allows the focus ring to control the aperture, can be problematic as it is easy to twist accidentally and unintentionally alter settings. Furthermore, its minimum focusing distance of 69 centimetres limits tighter detail shots, and the 75mm focal...

The Samyang AF 75mm F1.8 (Sony FE) is an ultra-lightweight (230g) and compact portrait-oriented prime lens that belongs to Samyang’s "Tiny Series". Retailing at $399 USD, it introduces a novel dual-mode custom switch on the side of the barrel, enabling users to alternate the focus ring between aperture control and manual focus. Optically, the lens features a 10-element formula that produces exceptional sharpness in the center and mid-frame even when shot wide open at F1.8. Its autofocus system utilizes a quick, near-silent STM motor that integrates seamlessly with Sony's Eye AF to deliver highly accurate portraits across various distances. The lens boasts distinct strengths and weaknesses. On the positive side, its primary pros include its portable build, smooth and beautiful bokeh rendering, excellent control of chromatic aberrations, and the highly functional custom switch. However, the review identifies notable cons: the lens completely lacks weather sealing, shows a tendency toward veiling and ghosting when pointed at the sun (making it flare-prone), and suffers from occasional, erratic "focus racking" during video work. While the native Sony FE 85mm F1.8 offers superior video...

In terms of performance, the review highlights several major pros, including its impressive centre-sharpness even when shooting wide-open at f/1.8, minimal lateral and axial chromatic aberration, and a very competitive, value-for-money price tag. On the downside, the cons include a lack of weather-sealing and corner-sharpness that drops off at the extreme edges, remaining merely good rather than great even when stopped down. Additionally, the lens shows some slight, uncorrected pincushion distortion and corner vignetting at wide apertures, though both can be easily resolved using automatic in-camera corrections. Overall, it is highly recommended as an affordable, lightweight alternative to heavier 85mm primes.

However, the lens has several drawbacks, primarily its plastic construction and a complete lack of dust and splash protection. Lab testing reveals disappointing resolution performance on high-resolution sensors like the 60MP Sony a7R IV, never exceeding "very good" territory even when stopped down. It is also not suitable for video due to highly visible focus breathing, nor is it meant for macro photography given its limited 1:7.7 magnification. While its budget-friendly price point makes it an appealing choice for occasional use or for 24MP camera owners, the reviewer ultimately suggests spending more on the superior Sony FE 85mm F1.8 lens.

The Rokinon/Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 FE is an exceptionally lightweight and affordable full-frame portrait prime lens designed specifically for Sony E-mount cameras. Priced at $399 and weighing just 230g, it prioritises maximum portability, offering full-frame users an alternative that matches the size and cost of crop-sensor systems. The lens delivers impressive central sharpness, low distortion, minimal vignetting, and smooth background bokeh, making it highly effective for casual portraits, travel, and everyday photography. Its autofocus system is fast, quiet, and reliable under standard conditions. Additionally, it features an innovative "Custom Mode" switch that turns the focus ring into an aperture control ring, though unlocking better customisation requires purchasing a separate $59 USB lens dock. However, the lens makes clear compromises in optical perfection and physical durability to achieve its low price point and small foot print. The physical construction is budget-friendly, utilizing some plastic components and entirely lacking weather sealing, which makes it unsuitable for harsh environments like heavy rain or dust storms. In terms of optics, its image quality at wide-open apertures lags behind more premium competitors, and corner sharpness...

The ePHOTOzine review highlights the Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 FE as an outstanding, lightweight (230g) short telephoto lens for Sony E-mount, featuring exceptional sharpness, smooth bokeh, and a silent linear STM motor. The lens is highly regarded for its value, offering a unique Custom Switch to control aperture alongside impressive optical performance with minimal distortion and flare. Despite its strengths, the lens lacks weather-sealing, features a basic plastic housing, and lacks extensive on-lens controls. For its overall performance and affordability, the reviewer highly recommends the lens.

The Samyang AF 75 mm f/1.8 FE is highly praised by LensTip as an exceptionally compact, lightweight, and shapely portrait lens that delivers an outstanding price-to-performance ratio. Optically, its biggest strength is its excellent image quality in the frame center, paired with good resolution on the edge of APS-C sensors and effective control over spherical aberration and distortion. Photographers will also appreciate its quick, silent autofocus system and very pleasing, smooth out-of-focus background rendering (bokeh). However, the lens does compromise in a few areas due to its budget-friendly and ultra-portable design. On the downside, LensTip notes that it struggles with noticeable coma in the corners of full-frame images and delivers only moderate performance when shooting against bright light, occasionally showing distinct flares and ghosting artifacts. Additionally, the internal barrel is not fully blackened, longitudinal chromatic aberration is not perfectly corrected at f/1.8, and full-frame corner sharpness requires stopping down to at least f/2.5 to achieve a decent resolution level.

The Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 FE for Sony full-frame cameras is a highly compact, affordable, and lightweight portrait lens priced at $399. Weighing only 8.11 oz (230 g), it offers a portable alternative to traditional 85mm portrait lenses. A major highlight is its unique "CUSTOM" switch, which allows users to toggle the focus ring to electronically control the aperture in stepped increments. Optically, the lens delivers surprisingly sharp images even when wide open at f/1.8, showing good color reproduction, well-controlled aberrations, minimal distortion, and plentiful, beautiful bokeh. The lens tracking is reliable, working well under low light, and it conveniently includes a semi-rigid travel pouch. However, the lens makes several compromises to maintain its budget-friendly price and featherweight build. Its body lacks weather-sealing, an autofocus toggle, or a customizable button, and the lightweight plastic construction makes it feel slightly delicate. While the sharpness is decent, heavier and more expensive lenses like the Sony 85mm f/1.8 are notably sharper and feature snappier autofocus speeds. Additionally, the custom control ring turns too easily, which can lead to accidental setting adjustments. The lens...

The PCMag review highlights the Rokinon 75mm F1.8 AF for Sony E as a highly portable, budget-friendly ($399) prime lens, weighing just 8.1 ounces and featuring a unique "Custom" switch for focus or aperture control. Key advantages include full compatibility with Sony’s advanced autofocus tracking systems and excellent, lightweight ergonomics for portraiture. Conversely, the review notes significant drawbacks, including optical quality that is not top-tier, heavy focus breathing that hinders video use, and a plastic construction lacking weather sealing. Due to these limitations, PCMag suggests investing in the more robust Sony FE 85mm F1.8 instead.

The Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 FE is a highly recommended, lightweight prime lens designed for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, offering an unusual focal length that bridges the gap between standard and portrait ranges. Weighing just 230g and measuring 69mm in length, its core strengths lie in its ultra-compact "Tiny" form factor and budget-friendly price point, which currently sits around USD$379 on Adorama. Testing on a Sony A7Riii revealed exceptional sharpness in the center of the frame from f/1.8 down to f/11, reaching its absolute sweet spot for edge-to-edge clarity between f/8 and f/11. A standout hardware feature is its innovative dual-mode Custom Switch, which allows the focus ring to instantly convert into a clickless aperture control ring. Despite its high praise, the lens exhibits a few notable drawbacks that buyers should consider. Its primary omission is a total lack of weather sealing, meaning photographers must exercise caution when shooting in dusty or wet environments. Optically, the lens suffers from noticeable vignetting at its maximum f/1.8 aperture, alongside slight chromatic aberrations in the extreme corners across all aperture settings, though both...
