Rokinon AF 75mm F 1 8 FE Review | 54 Data compared

The PCMag review highlights the $399 Rokinon 75mm F1.8 AF for Sony E-mount as a highly compact, lightweight (8.1 oz) prime lens featuring a quick, quiet linear STM motor compatible with advanced eye-tracking. Pros include an innovative custom control ring that toggles between manual focus and aperture adjustment. Conversely, the lens suffers from "not top-notch" optical performance, failing to deliver the excellent resolution typical of short-telephoto primes, and lacks weather sealing. It also exhibits visible focus breathing and, due to these performance drawbacks, PCMag advises spending $200 more for the superior Sony FE 85mm F1.8 instead.

The Rokinon (also known as Samyang) AF 75mm f/1.8 FE is a highly portable and budget-friendly portrait prime lens designed specifically for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras. Priced at $399, it trades the traditional 85mm focal length for a slightly wider 75mm to significantly minimize its physical footprint, weighing a mere 8.11 ounces (230g) and measuring only 2.56 by 2.72 inches. Reviewer Matthew Saville highlights that the lens is an excellent, lightweight option for casual walk-around shooting, travel, or as a portable backup for professional photographers. It delivers great overall image quality with impressive contrast, low distortion, and smooth bokeh, while its linear STM autofocus motor provides fast, silent, and highly reliable performance across most shooting scenarios. However, the lens makes a few notable compromises to achieve its compact form factor and entry-level price point. On the optical side, pixel-peepers will notice that its sharpness falls slightly behind its competitors when shot wide-open at f/1.8, with image quality dropping off significantly in the extreme corners of the frame. In terms of build quality, the construction relies heavily on budget-friendly plastic components...

The Shotkit review highlights the Rokinon AF 75mm f/1.8 as an exceptionally lightweight, compact, and affordable lens featuring creamy bokeh, fast autofocus, and excellent sharpness in the center. It is praised for producing stunning portraits with minimal distortion, making it a high-value option for Sony E-mount photographers. However, compromises include a plastic build, a lack of weather sealing, and noticeable corner softness when shooting wide open. Additionally, the lens can exhibit autofocus hunting in low light and reduced contrast in bright backlighting compared to more expensive alternatives.

However, the lens has notable drawbacks, receiving an average 3.0-star rating due to disappointing lab results on high-resolution sensors like the 60MP Sony a7R IV. It struggles to achieve critical sharpness across the frame, making its optical limitations highly apparent on large displays or when cropping images. To save on weight and cost, the lens utilizes a plastic barrel construction and completely omits dust, splash, and weather protection. It also suffers from visible focus breathing, rendering it less than ideal for video work, and lacks built-in optical stabilization. Because of these compromises, reviewers suggest spending more on the Sony FE 85mm F1.8, which provides superior optics and weather sealing.

The ePHOTOzine review highlights the Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 FE as an outstanding, compact, and affordable portrait lens for Sony cameras, earning an Editor's Choice award. Key strengths include exceptional central sharpness from f/1.8 to f/5.6, smooth bokeh, and silent, fast autofocus. Conversely, the review notes the lack of weather sealing as a significant drawback, limiting its use in harsh environments. While the 75mm focal length is excellent for portraiture, it may feel restricted for some as a general-purpose lens.

The Samyang AF 75mm F1.8 FE is a highly capable and ultra-portable portrait-oriented prime lens for Sony full-frame and APS-C mirrorless cameras. As part of Samyang's "Tiny Series," this lens delivers impressive optical engineering in a package that weighs a mere 230 grams and measures just 69mm in length. It stands out by offering a unique 75mm focal length (112.5mm equivalent on APS-C) as a direct, budget-friendly alternative to traditional 85mm prime lenses. A key physical innovation is its integrated dual-mode custom switch, which allows users to reprogram the physical focus ring to smoothly control the electronic aperture directly from the lens barrel. The primary advantages (pros) of this lens include its incredibly lightweight and compact form factor, beautiful bokeh rendering, excellent center and mid-frame sharpness even at its wide-open F1.8 setting, and strong control over chromatic aberrations. Furthermore, its linear STM autofocus motor is practically silent and delivers excellent Eye AF precision during portrait sessions. The lens package also generously includes a protective zipper case and a deep petal-shaped lens hood. Conversely, the notable disadvantages (cons) highlighted in the...

The Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 FE is a highly compact, lightweight (230g) short telephoto lens designed for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, positioning itself as an affordable portrait option. It stands out for its unique, historical 75mm focal length and impressive optical performance, delivering excellent sharpness and contrast in the center even at wide-open aperture. A major strength is its superior control over chromatic aberrations, virtually eliminating longitudinal color fringing on shiny surfaces where competitor lenses like the Sony 85mm f/1.8 struggle. Furthermore, the lens features a smooth, circular bokeh with minimal distortion to background light sources, and includes a dual-mode programmable custom button that allows the focus ring to operate as a clickless aperture ring. However, the review highlights several compromises made to achieve its low weight and competitive price point. Its outer housing is constructed entirely from plastic rather than metal, and the lens lacks any additional weather sealing or a rear gasket to protect against moisture and dust. Optically, the corners lag slightly behind the center sharpness at f/1.8 and require stopping down to f/4 to peak, while...

The Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 for Sony E-mount is an affordable, ultra-compact prime lens from the "Tiny series" that costs around €419 and pairs excellently with bodies like the Sony A7III. Designed primarily for portraiture and detail shots, it delivers impressive central sharpness, soft and pleasant bokeh, and fast, accurate autofocus comparable to the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. Its lightweight build (65 x 69mm dimensions with a 58mm filter size) makes it an exceptionally easy lens to carry all day, offering a unique focal length alternative to traditional 50mm or 85mm lenses. However, the lens does have notable performance drawbacks, including reduced corner sharpness and visible color deviation in the corners when shooting wide open at f/1.8, though these issues mostly disappear by f/2.8. Its custom mode switch—which allows the focus ring to control the aperture—can be easily bumped by accident, and its 69-centimetre minimum focus distance can occasionally feel limiting for tight detail shots. Additionally, it is less suited for general cityscapes or landscape photography where an extreme wide-angle lens is typically preferred, though it remains a fun, budget-friendly choice...

The Rokinon/Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 FE is a highly portable portrait lens that prioritises compactness and value without sacrificing image quality. It is significantly smaller and lighter than typical 85mm f/1.4 alternatives and even the Sony 85mm f/1.8, making it an ideal physical match for smaller mirrorless bodies like the Sony A7c. Reviewer Eric L. Woods highlights its exceptional autofocus performance, noting it is among the swiftest he has used and remains reliable in low-light conditions. Optically, the lens is praised for being very sharp wide open and producing pleasing, "classic" rendering with smooth bokeh that avoids the sterile look of some modern glass. Despite its high performance, the lens has a few specific drawbacks, most notably the lack of weather resistance, which may concern outdoor photographers. While it includes a custom switch on the barrel to allow the focus ring to control the aperture, it requires a separate lens dock for firmware updates, which the reviewer noted was necessary right out of the box. However, with a retail price significantly lower than competitors—often found on sale for $299—these concessions...
