What we like about Pentax HD DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited

  • Extremely compact and lightweight 'pancake-style' design
  • Excellent all-metal build quality typical of the Limited series
  • Highly resistant to flare with impressive contrast
  • Produces distinct and attractive starburst effects
  • Minimal barrel distortion for an ultra-wide lens
  • Convenient built-in sliding petal-shaped lens hood
  • Quick-Shift focus system allows manual overrides during AF

What we don't like about Pentax HD DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited

  • Noticeable softness at the edges/corners, especially at f/4
  • Lack of weather sealing
  • Built-in hood can interfere with certain filter systems
  • Relatively slow maximum aperture of f/4 for a prime lens
  • Presence of some lateral chromatic aberration/fringing
  • Screw-in lens cap can be tedious to use

Verdict

The HD Pentax-DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited is a premium, ultra-compact wide-angle prime lens designed for APS-C format K-mount DSLRs, delivering a 23mm equivalent focal length and an 86-degree angle of view. Built with a high-grade aluminium barrel weighing just 189g, its optical formula features 8 elements in 6 groups—including extra-low dispersion (ED) and hybrid aspherical (AL) elements—alongside a multi-layer High Definition (HD) coating and a rounded 7-blade diaphragm. Key advantages include impressive central sharpness, minimal barrel distortion, high flare resistance, a built-in sliding petal-shaped hood, and a Quick-Shift focus system for seamless manual adjustments. However, its notable drawbacks include soft edge-performance when shot wide open at f/4, visible chromatic aberration in high-contrast areas, a slow screw-driven autofocus mechanism, a cumbersome screw-in lens cap, and a lack of weather-resistant sealing.
